#75so...you are saying Shields who has never knocked out any fighter in over 10 years of fighting, 31 fights, and hasnt TKOd anybody in over 3 years (back to the EliteXC days) is going to KO GSP who has lost once by TKO (4 years ago) in 23 fights? You are just pure comedy. I can see how you can take Shields with those great dog odds, but to say he will win via KO is just idiotic. The only way Shields wins is on the ground, he cant trade punches worth shit.Comment -

#83wonder how gsp's takedown defense is. i know he's faced wrestlers before but shields is probably the best grappler he's faced yet.Comment -

#84He's the best ground grappler that GSP has ever faced, but let's not act like Shields' wrestling is something special. He's excellent at bringing guys down once he gets deep position on a leg, but he completely lacks an explosive first step. More importantly, most of his set-ups are very prosaic and plodding; he tends to just flounder with his hands coming forward until he grabs hold of his opponent.Comment -

If he moves up, I'd like to see GSP at middleweight vs: Anderson Silva, Chael Sonen, Yushin Okami, Jacare Souza, and Hector Lombard.Guess who's stackin' gold and silver? THIS GUYComment -

#86I wouldn't mind seeing the match up Diaz (diaz would lose but how did Diaz do against Shields?) Condit wouldn't match up well at all, Ben Askren raised my eyebrows! that would be a good fight to watch because he can keep anyone on the ground... Nate Marquardt would be a good one too!

This is the matchup I want to see. I'd also like to see GSP at welterweight vs: Nick Diaz, Carlos Condit, Ben Askren, and Nate Marquardt.

#93If Askren gets into the UFC a fight I would want to see rather then throwing him in against GSP (Brutal first fight) I would want to see a match up with Hendricks, both Stud wrestlers in college... I have seen them both compete at the National tournement in college, to me that would be a great test on their grapplingComment -

i hear you...and i basically agree....but okami is a huge 185 pounder........respectfully,not really a great analogy.imo... the fact that shields,an amazingly one-dimensional grappler kept it somewhat close is laudable...it`s amazing that given his skillset he can still beat bigger guys...
isn`t okami getting ready to fight anderson silva?....the guy is a very bad man... not entirely sure how gsp would do vs henderson and okami...
that said,i tend to agree that gsp will dictate where this fight goes...which imo, will be on their feet until shields starts to slow down....the mma setting makes gsp`s grappling comparable to shields because of all the other facets of gsp`s game shields has to consider......but in a strictly grappling format, shields would be the favorite,i`d wager...he`s bigger...and just a better grappler(based on his grappling history).....
you don`t run off a win streak like shields has(without any stand-up to speak of)without having incredible wrestling chops....
but given the venue...shields` one dimensional game and the 5 round distance, this is a very tough road to hoe in spite of being the better grappler...which based on their resumes(in and out of mma)i think he clearly is....
gsp is very smart....i doubt that gsp lets this hit the ground until he`s softened shields up with stand-up,ala the fitch fight....he`ll let shields tire going for takedowns and then he`ll wear him out(as someone mentioned previously..it may have been chairb)....
an early sub seems to be shields best shot....in a long fight, gsp just appears to have too many weapons...and too much cardio...
just one man`s opinion... i hope they grapple early while they`re fresh......i`m sure it would be amazing stuff...Last edited by rocky mattioli; 04-18-11, 05:05 PM.Comment -

Let's not get fooled by the UFC hype train. This is going to be GSP by murder. If you can't finish Kampmann on the ground. No way you can stop GSP. And the comments of Shields by KO are ludicrous.Comment -

Do you think that Shields has better BJJ than Serra or Penn? Do you think Kampmann (or Shields for that matter) has fought as tough of guys as GSP? Did you watch Shields-Kampmann?
That was the lamest win for a top contender that I've seen in a long time (except for maybe Leites-Marquardt). I've stated several times that I thought Kampman won. But hey if you think Shields will submit GSP that's cool. I just strongly disagree. I think GSP has better cardio, striking, wrestling, experience and training camp. I think that GSP is going to break Shields' face, and that we are going to see after 3 min in round 1 exactly what is going to happen for the next 22 min, essentially GSP dominating Shields.Comment -

#105yes. shields has out-grappled okami and henderson and won. middleweights with decent wrestling. his grappling is that good because his stand up is crap. then again gsp is the best ww wrestler.Comment
