Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Monday, 7/28/08
Starting Tuesday (July 1), we will start a new July Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $100 account at 5 Dimes, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 5 Dimes account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

    *IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at 5 Dimes prior to making picks SIGN UP Here.

Before participating, players must PM their 5 Dimes account ID to SBRforum Staff

    1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

    2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

    3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

    4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

    5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.
*-EXCEPTION: If someone edits a post on the last day of the competition in an attempt to get an automatic loss in order to win the Last Place prize, then the original post will stand.

    6. And here’s the fine print:

    • Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
    • One entry per home and computer.
    • Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
    • Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
    • Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-leaders lose.
    • All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
    • SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

It looks like the race for last place will be more interesting than the race for first.
thezbar has now more than doubled up second place Nostradamus at the top, while smitch124 and ertl09 are seperated by just 0.43 units at the bottom of the standings.

To me it seems the visiting team wins the majority of the games in this rivalry. I also need this line to go up to +800 and be the only one to take this game to have a chance in this contest.

I officially give up for this month. 4 straight underdogs who blow leads on me. No way I can come back.

            Thanks for the contest.

REDS +123: This line plummeted since I got +137 in real life. Oswalt is 19-1 in 24 career appearances against the Reds, but he is making his first start since being disabled with a hip injury, and the fact that the Houston bullpen is expected to be called on early makes the Astros a dicey proposition as favorites. Besides, Oswalt was not having a typical season even before the injury, as he is just 7-8 with an uncharacteristic 4.56 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. While he is certainly better than that, he will not get a chance to fully prove that tonight since he will undoubtedly be on a pitch count, and the Astros bullpen ranks fifth from the bottom out of 30 major league teams with a 4.35 ERA. Now Johnny Cueto has virtually identical numbers to Oswalt this year, as he is 7-9 with a 4.90 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. That in itself give the Reds value as dogs, but they gain even more value when you consider that Cueto has more upside, looking downright dominant at times this year, and that Cincinnati has the far superior bullpen, ranking ninth in the majors with a 3.53 ERA.

Oswalt not the same pitcher he was at this point and making his return from the DL. Astros dicey bullpen gets action and that is always worth betting against.

Gotto to go with the Reds tonight.

Oswalt coming off a hip injury looks vulnerable here.

Oswalt will be on a pitch count tonight.

                                      I like this kid Cueto.

                                        913 San Francisco Giants +170

None of the games tonight look inviting so I'm going to walk the plank. I couldn't find a number at all in favor of the Giants...none. Correia emerged with a no-decision from his last outing against Washington, although he blanked the Nationals for four innings...yeah the Nationals, but he did think it was his best outing of the season. Kuroda had another wobbly beginning, following up his two-inning start in Arizona by allowing five runs over the first three innings at Coors Field...so he's been known to be shaky. I'll drink the SF kool-aid and take a stab with Bruce's boys.
