Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Thursday, 5/1/08
Starting Thursday (May 1), we will start a new May Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $250 account at BetJamaica, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 BetJamaica account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

    *IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at BetJamaica prior to making picks Sign up here

Before participating, players must PM their BetJamaica account ID to SBRforum Staff

    1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

    2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

    3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

    4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

    5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.

    6. And here’s the fine print:

    • Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
    • One entry per home and computer.
    • Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
    • Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
    • Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-lealers lose.
    • All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
    • SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

Last day to enter contest and be eligible for prizes is May 12.

            MIL +130
Zambrano is a notch above .500 in his career vs. MIL at 9-8, but the Cubs have lost his last 3 starts vs. MIL at Wrigley dating back to '07. Gallardo has been dominant in his two starts this season, one ER in 14 IP. He pitched well at Wrigley in '07 in his lone start, two ER in 6 IP and should have had a win if not for the bullpen giving up 3 runs in the 9th.

              EP stole my thunder! LOL

MILWAUKEE BREWERS +130: Zambrano can be tough, but Milwaukee’s Yovani Gallado is virtually an automatic bet at this price right now. Gallardo pitched brilliantly as a rookie last season, and he has picked up right where he left off since returning from an injury, allowing just one run and 10 hits over 14 innings in two starts this year. He also allowed just two runs on six innings in his only career start vs. the Cubs last season. As good as Zambrano is, he has had some struggled vs. the Brewers, such as his start against them here at Wrigley last year when he allowed six runs and nine hits in 6.1 innings.

My buddy works at a Starbucks near Wrigley field and he told me that Zambrano was there all night drinking coffee and red bull which was the previous cause of his arm problems. I expect the caffeine to really effect his pitching arm early, leading to an early exit.

                          Pittsburgh Pirates +117

The Pirates bats came alive yesterday in a 13-1 win over the Mets. I look for them to keep it going today against Odalis Perez and the Nationals. Zach Duke has been struggling this year, I look for him to snap out of it against the Nats who are the worst hitting team in the NL(.229) and finally get his first win of the season.

#957 Pitt +117 : both of these teams struggle at the plate and especially against lefties, but Duke only has 2 losses in 5 starts and all his starts have came against solid hitting teams, CHC,LAD,ATL,and Phil, while the Nats he's facing are 2nd from the bottom in the league at .229, and a miserable .219 at home, plus Pitt avg. 1 run better a game vs. lefties than Wash.

Batista seems to have pitched better as of late than Byrd. And Seattle lineup should be able to hit Byrd who does not pitch that fast, more of a crafty pitcher to get through.

Even though Zambrano has been good this year, Gallardo has been better. I would take +130 with either of these pitchers in this matchup.

                                          Mariners +135
The Mariners have called up some new blood from Triple A Tacoma: right fielder Wladimir Balentien and catcher Jeff Clement. Indians have had trouble scoring lately (yesterday being an exception). I'm betting on Batista to have a decent start, Byrd to be mediocre, and the Indians to stumble. +135 seems like value here.

                                            957 Pittsburgh Pirates +117

Nats played 13 inning match yesterday, using most of their better relievers and while Odalis Perez numbers looks quite good, I'm not expecting him to be lights out this season. Duke is not that good really, but against Nationals he should have a shot. Pirates batting has been lively lately and as long as Duke can throw a half decent game, I think they'll compete in this one.

I just PMed my account information. My first pick:

                                                  Seattle Mariners +135

I think that the Indians are overvalued here because of Batista's recovering from an injury and the fact that he's historically had a rough time against the Indians.

But the squad that the Indians have now haven't hit Batista all that well. Conversely, the Mariners have hit Byrd pretty well-- and they've been hitting well of late, and scoring more frequently than the tribe as well.

The pitching in this one is essentially a wash. Both Duke and Perez are capable of giving up runs. Although Perez has been the better of the two as of late, there is a greater disparity in the offenses of both teams with an edge to the Pirates. Good value here...
