I've been tracking not only the pens ERA but the actual number of pitches and WHO is pitching. If the back end of a pen is tired it means one thing but the LR;s mean another!

Another thing I've been watching is Early Season Complete Game Syndrome! But - that is off topic - good luck!!

elaborate on that...

years ago i used to fade any pitcher off of 120 pitch games next outing.....i never used to document my strategies very well before sbr. i remember some games started to lose and i swayed away from that.

thats why i love posting here....keeps me very organized sport by sport and i can look back for ways to improve...

tracking pitches thrown is legit...kudos to you!

Friday 4/22: (8u) over mets 8.5 (A2)

(2u) cubs +100_fading the dodgers in a letdown spot. come from behind 11 inning win yesterday vs the braves. now they travel cross country to face the cubs in wrigley. billingsley gave up 2er in 5ip with 10 hits last year in wrigley. he typically doesnt go deep into games, and the dodgers have one of the worst pens in the league thus far ranked 29th. i look for the cubs to take control of the game innings 7, 8.

I'm obsessing over one team and following their opponents closely 3 series ahead(bull pens, top of the line-ups and so forth) and I noticed something - then on TV the announcers started talking about it and a lightbulb went off above my head.

early in the season pitchers are not 100% strong yet. If they pitch a complete game a few things happen. One is that they probably go 100 pitches, no big deal right? But wait, they throw extra warm up pitches, have 1 or 2 more AB's, make more defensive plays and so forth. So while people look at pitch count they are MUCH more tired then normal.

THEN - because they went 9 innings of PROBABLY great pitching the line for the next game is inflated. They come out for the next game feeling good but their breaker is not as sharp, the movement on the fast ball is not as great.

On the other hand the opponents are zoned in to beat this guy.

Again - no numbers to back this up (yet) but something to watch for. I've seen it three times this year. Gallardo was one - he has pitched poorly since his complete game (will pitch good tonight), Cliff Lee And Roy Halladay for the Phillies both had problems! I was 2-1 on those BIG dog plays!

fletcher was the 1b ump in philly/sd yesterday, but reynolds is behind the plate.....it looks like when a weekend series that starts on Thur, the 1b ump is not always hp the next day.....glad i was home (or maybe not)
