15 seasons as a head coach, barely a .500 record, and has led only 2 teams to the postseason (NYM 99 and 00). On top of that, he sounds like a total jackass when he speaks on ESPN. any other Bobby Valentine haters out there ?
who would ever hire Bobby Valentine as their head coach ?

#3Most brilliant baseball mind in a long time. His baseball knowledge and strategy ranks right up there with LaRussa and Leyland. Where he falls short however, is people skills. And that holds him back.
I ate dinner at his restaurant in Milford Connecticut and he happened to be there a few years back. I, just a commoner, got to talk with him for over an hour about everything from baseball strategy to Pete Rose to umpires. He was absolutely great to me, but all of his tales had one thing in common -- they all ended because they were difficult people to deal with, which led me to believe that maybe he was a tough guy to deal with.
Most enlightening one hour of my life.Comment -

Most notably, he had a pretty decent squad in Texas back in '92 (Pudge, Palmeiro, Ruben Sierra, 92 AL HR leader Juan Gon, Kenny Rogers, Nolan Ryan, and though hes a stretch, Jose Guzman had a 16-win season in 92) and just wasnt able to get the W's. I will NEVER be able to hold Valentine in a high regard from a coaching perspective.
Then again, he did win a Japanese WS so i guess that speaks to something positive in his coaching abilites. I guess I just cant handle Valentine trying to parlay his head coaching failures as some type of knowledgeable experience.Comment -

#5Well, youve met him so I cant really speak much to that. But I guess, by your account, he would make a good scout or coaching specialist (hitting, pitching, fielding, etc). But as a head coach, I cant say i really ever found anything hes ever done to be impressive or remarkable, and he was provided with some decent teams and talent during his 15 seasons.

I understand, and I believe that he was successful in Japan because those players are loyal and respectful, so they are easier to deal with. I think dealing with personalities was his major flaw in Texas, and with media in New York. I'd like to see him get another shot because I think he may have learned how to deal with people better.Comment -

#8would he be a good coach with any team? again review his past seasons and look at some of the names and talent on some of those rosters. and i dont know that we can say hes learned from his mistakes just yet, as he has yet to do serious work in the MLB since 2002.
chemistry is built by the players, definitely. however, its up to the head coach to maintain that chemistry and valentine seems to only disrupt team (and, to an extent, organizational) chemistry. however, who knows what his future holds. he has been out of baseball for quite a few years now so maybe hell get a chance to prove himself again.Comment -
