Saying the A's will win is a bigger surprise lol.

Im not sure why everyone is so down on the Sox offense this year.

        Look at the changes:

3B. they lose lowell who batted 280/337/474 (106 OPS+) ; and replace him with Beltre, discounting last year when he was injured Beltre's previous 3 year span was a 270/325/468 (108 OPS+), lower raw numbers but he play 100 games in two of the worst hitter parks in the majors (Sea/Oak). Over all the offesive production is a push.

SS. They rpalce the Nick Green/Julio Lugo/Alex Gonazlars and thier combined sub 700 OPS (80 ops+) with Scutaro. Last year was probably an abberation but Scutro still figures to be better. Even before last year he 3 year trend had him at a 90 OPS+, over all a solid improvement.

        C. last year they got 100 games out of Jason Variteks Rotting corpse (209/313/390; 80 OPS+), 100 extra games of Victor Martinez represents a huge upgrade.

OF. They lose Bay (267/384/537; 134 Ops=) with Mike Cameron whose three year trend (245/334/452; 108 ops+) is far better than most realize.

Overall would you rather have a guy with a 134ops+ and 80 OPS+ or one guy with a 125 OPS and 108 OPS? add in the upgrade at shortstop and, if anything, the offense is at worst only slighly worse than last year.

Last year they were the 3rd best Offense in the AL, and buy a solid margin over the 4th (872run v 817runs), slighly worse and they are still maybe the 3rd best in the AL.

Wow, that's a nice analysis. A for effort.

As a Sox fan, I still say they will not score enough runs to win the W.S. They will, like last year, beat up on the Orioles, Mariners, etc., and will get shut down by the better teams. They will win 90 games but might not even make the playoffs. If they do make the playoffs, they still won't win it all. Hope I'm wrong, of course.

The Big Papi situation could get ugly - off the juice back to a platoon player. He could tear the clubhouse apart if/when he is benched.

Im a Sox Fan too, and have spent a few months explaining this to people, They are, by no means, a lock for the WS, but as Billy Beane said you can only build a team to make it to the playoffs, and after that the teams are so equal and the games so few luck is too big a factor in the playoffs. The Sox are built just fine, I feel they are better than the rays and almost as good as the Yankees this year.

But, if anyone thinks that Theo isn't eyeing Adrain Gonzales; not only are they crazy, but they haven;t watched Ortiz the last year and a half.

everyone is talking about the run scoring, but what about all the runs they will prevent with better pitching and defense. Basically they are the Braves of the 90's. Of course the Braves only won once b/c Glavine and Maddux sucked in the Playoffs. They certainly look competitive in this series vs the yanks.

The price for Gonzalez goes up every day. SD can't get rid of him. Imagine what the fans would think. 1st time GM for his 1st move sends hometown boy and franchise player to the team said GM came from. It wouldn't matter who they got for him, the fans wouldn't go for it.
