              Yogi's a good pick.

Josh Gibson and Mickey Cochrane were also a little bit of a whackanut.

That is awesome. Too many jokes there.

Here are two who had more fame after their careers ended --- and they certainly were "characters", if not all-star type catchers:

                            Joe Garagiola , Bob Uecker

It's interesting that Joe G and Yogi B were boyhood friends from the same block in St Louis.

I like that someone remembers Smokey Burgess -- when he didn't start games, he was one of the most reliable pinch hitters of all time

Rich Gedman. Ugliest face in the history of the sport. But if you had to catch Oil Can Boyd all those years, you would be a little messed up too.

Good call, Arch. Berg is a fantastic story. If you ever get a chance to listen to the songs that Chuck Brodsky wrote and performed, the one he did about Moe Berg is something you'd probably like. Did you know his dad was always embarrassed to admit his son was a major league ballplayer?

Yogi's a good call as well. I'd love to sit and talk about baseball history with Berra. Another interesting fact about Yogi: He's pretty much credited with being the first player to have an agent negotiate his contract in full.

But give me Bob Uecker as my pick for the coolest catcher. No, he wasn't as talented like the others mentioned, but I still love the "original" Youk.

Sal Fasano, for his hair and stach and how he laid down a bunt for a base hit once.

                                            Jayhawk Owens, for his name.

I had some family that played semi-pro ball with Benito Santiago's cousin. By the cousin's own account Benito was an a-hole.

Johnny Ballgame. Fasano was funny, would have fit in perfect on the 93 team. Sat 10 rows behind the plate at citizens bank one time and laughed my ass off when he chewed out the bat boy. So close I could hear every word.

Unless the definition of "coolest" is up for debate.

I mean, come on, posing for Playgirl?? Appearing on Family Feud AND Soul Train?? Do you even need more than that?
Okay, if you need more than that, here it is: He got stabbed in the fukkin THROAT with a broken bat and that's why catchers wear throat protectors now.

You can debate forever who the BEST catcher is/was. Bench/Yogi/Piazza/Pudge whatever. But if you want to talk about the COOLEST catcher, there is literally NO debate... Steve Yeager all the way.

The only guy even CLOSE is Moe Berg because of his spy shit, but man, when you get stabbed through your fukkin throat with a broken bat, that kinda beats everything, IMO.
