All eyes on Sabathia for Yankees in Game 4
All eyes on Sabathia for Yankees in Game 4

So the Yankees are human after all. Following the Angels' 5-4 win in extra innings on Monday, New York sends their ace C.C. Sabathia to the mound in Game 4 of the ALCS.

Both the Angels and Yankees have to be pleased with added time for concession sales so far in this series with two extra inning games.

Howie Kendrick had three hits on Monday
and is 8-12 lifetime vs. C.C. Sabathia

After a 12-inning loss in Game 2 on Saturday in New York, Mike Scioscia's Angels got up off the mat at home with an 11-inning, 5-4 triumph in Anaheim on Monday to put a chink in the Yankees' postseason armor. Los Angeles withstood four pinstripe pops and rallied from a 3-0 deficit behind their pen and the lower part of their order to grab some life in he best-of-seven match.

Now comes the proverbial pivotal play in the series, a Game 4 to tie for the Angels or for the Yankees to take a 3-1 hold. Scioscia will send Scott Kazmir to the hill in search of knotting it up while Joe Girardi counters with his ace, C.C. Sabathia, who draws the opening chalk at -135.

Once again it's the game the Angels got Kazmir to pitch. His previous playoff start at Fenway in Game 3 of the ALDS eventually came out in LA's favor, but not because of Kazmir's effort (6 IP, 5 ER). The Angels pulled off the late rally to win that one by a 7-6 count.

The New York lineup is no stranger to him, with three regular seasons starts this year vs. the Yankees, two in Tampa and one here in Anaheim on Sep 23. Kazmir worked six and allowed all three runs in a New York triumph, 3-2. Jorge Posada (11-for-25, HR) and Mark Teixeira (7-for-11) own him; the rest of the Yanks lineup is hitting .179 against him.

Sabathia did exactly what he was hired to do in Game 1 of this series, tossing eight and allowing one run with seven strikeouts. That was off a good effort in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Twins. Both of those games were in New York where he was 12-5 counting the postseason. It's not like C.C. was much worse on the road at 12-7, but the fact he was 12-7 on the road and one of those seven defeats came here in Anaheim on July 12 when he allowed five in 6.2 innings, you take the any angle you can find when you're wanting to wager against a pitcher liked Sabathia and a team like the Yankees right now.

Want another angle on the Angels? Howie Kendrick, coming off a three-hit game that saw him touch the plate three times, is 8-for-12 against Sabathia.

The only real angle I needed for Game 4 came in the top of the 11th of Game 3when Girardi pulled Rivera after three outs and 17 pitches. Mo will be good to go in the eighth on Tuesday, if he's needed. And I like Sabathia's odds on getting there with the lead. New York -135 is my play.

    STARTING PITCHERS
    ALCS Game 4, Tue, Oct 20, 7:57 p.m. (ET): C.C. Sabathia (22-12, 3.37 regular season / 2-0, 1.27 postseason) vs. Scott Kazmir (4-2, 1.73 with LAA, 16-10, 4.89 overall regular season / 1-0, 7.50 postseason)

    UMPIRE
Veteran field arbiter Jerry Layne takes the plate in this one with a penchant towards the home team this last season (20-13 Home-Visitor) and the same lean to the Under (10-19-4 O/U).

Working in his 10th postseason, his last playoff go behind the mask was Game 3 of the 2006 NLCS in St. Louis, a 5-0 win for the Cardinals over the Mets. That game would still be going on if not for Steve Trachsel's evening as the New York starting pitcher.

    WEATHER
Should be a nice, clear and cool evening in Anaheim on Tuesday night. Might still see it in the low-70s, if not right at 70ºF, come first pitch and dipping into the 60s after that.

NOTE: The W-L records shown for starting pitchers are their team's W-L mark when they start games. Statistical sources for this article were Retrosheet.org, Baseball-Reference.com and ESPN.com and of course, S-BEE-R-dot-com!

Kazmir will get the W.... in my blog i show a few key elements to why Yankees should worry about the series going to 2-2 rather than being excited for CC.

The numbers do not support pitching on short rest in the playoffs. They just don't...

If it works out for the Yanks, Girardi and the Yanks look brilliant...

If it doesn't, I can't wait to see the back pages of the NY tabloids!!!

Rest is over rated when you weigh 300 pounds.. throwing 120 pitches for this guy is no big deal..

If he wa 5'6' 160.. it would be a problem..

Yankees -130 is a deal.. do not overthink this..

I think Kazmir will go at least 6.1 Angels will have a solid outing today and turn the series to 2-2. There might be a little magic with (Adenhart looking from above)

100% agree with your last line.

That's why I took the LAA's and the over.

CC is getting rocked like the music factory today.

Yes everyone says Yankees could have been up 3-0. But at the same time Angels had the lead blew it came back to win. IF people want to play that game the Angels could have been up 2-1. I think this is the Angels Year.

Yep.....and I think it has EVERYTHING to do with Adenhart..

How can you bet against a team at home that has this to play for........and has that issue for HEART and DESIRE.

LAA are playing for something more than a $200,000,000 payroll.......they are playing for him.

This game does not come down to payroll or talent..........It will come down to HEART......

                      Rock it!
