MLB has already come out and stated that the balls are different this year which in turn has allowed for more HRs to be hit. This also means that outs are becoming singles, singles becoming doubles, etc. Of course, who can say that this would explain everything but what I will say is that the game is being altered in an unnatural way by MLB itself.

The thing about this theory is that both teams use the same baseball so that doesn't give one team an advantage over another. It just gives the offense somewhat of an advantage over the defense. I guess it favors the team with the statistically 'better' hitters but it doesn't really explain why one team continues to sweep another team over and over again. Maybe the backtest just didn't go back far enough to show how the system performed since 10-15 years ago...

I think the balls were changed a few years ago. I remember Yu Darvish talking about it when he got beat up by the Astros in the World Series a few years ago (although maybe he was just fishing for excuses).

I don't think the increase in home runs doesn't give any team a latent advantage but does increase the standard deviation of possible score outcomes. With greater risk, bettors should be given better odds...but in fact, I personally think odds are going the other way. I've seen -300+ odds way too many times this season. Where as Clayton Kershaw at home vs the worst team in the league five years ago might have been like -290.

All in all:
-more advantage to pitchers; lower stdev (outcome easier to predict); bettors will be given worse odds
-more advantage to batters; higher stdev (outcome more difficult to predict); betters should be given better odds (but we are receiving worse odds!)

This is my tin foil hat theory. Either way, hope we can pull it together next season!

I don't think you can count Mariners +1.5 as a win. The starting pitcher for Angels, Barria, ended up not starting (though he did come in the 3rd inning) so it nullified that bet. I don't know of any sportsbooks that allow you to bet on the run line without also selecting the scheduled starters for the game.

I agree and this thing that's going on with these pitcher changes is ridiculous, really messes things up for system bets where the starter doesn't matter but the books won't allow you to have 'action' instead of listed.

I don't think you can count it as a loss either. When the pitcher changes it's a cancelled bet and your money refunded. I'm sure that's what happened to everyone else. There's no guideline as to what to do when a bet is cancelled but didn't place any further bets thereafter. Better to mark it up as a push or tie.

If the first game is cancelled, the system says to do bet A on the 2nd game and so on. I used the closing odds on ScoresAndOdds to calculate the loss. I know many of us technically didnt lose money, but if you kept betting, that would be the series would have lost.
