Since the system relies on ESPN's RPI chart, we could only try this on college baseball. Unfortunately, ESPN doesnt give them an actual RPI value, they just do rankings. Also, there are 297 teams. Pretty tedious.

College baseball does have RPI and it does work. Mississippi State was swept by Vanderbilt in the regular season and beat them 2/3 in the super regionals. I have used it more than just this occasion.
