PIT PIRATES
Fri 7:05 p.m. ET CLEAR. OUT TO RIGHT CENTER 4-9 66 23 % Humid
Braves: While winning his first two starts, Jurrjens has successfully utilized a bend-but-don't-break approach. Despite issuing eight walks and allowing opponents to compile a .347 on-base percentage in his first 11 innings, the 23-year-old right-hander has allowed just three earned runs. During his five-walk outing against the Nationals on Sunday, he said his control problems were a result of attempting to be too fine with his pitches. He was 1-1 with a 4.35 ERA in two starts against the Pirates last year.
Pirates: Maholm delivered his second consecutive strong outing on Saturday afternoon, limiting the Reds to just one run on three hits in seven innings. He walked two and struck out three in a 101-pitch effort. Maholm retired the first 11 batters he faced and did not allow a hit until Brandon Phillips' single with two outs in the fourth. The Pirates left-hander was coming off his solid outing on Opening Day when he allowed just one earned run, one intentional walk and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.Comment -

NY METS
Fri 7:10 p.m. ET CLEAR. LEFT TO RIGHT 9-14 64 29 % Humid
Brewers: Bush settled for no decision in his first start of the season on Saturday, when he surrendered three earned runs on six hits in 6 1/3 effective innings against the Cubs. Bush walked two and struck out five, and might have been out of trouble with only two runs on his record if not for a close call at first base by umpire Angel Hernandez that went against Milwaukee. Bush has traditionally struggled away from home; he was 28-20 with a 3.82 ERA in home games and 15-26 with a 5.18 ERA away from home entering this season, a trend he will look to reverse. He has pitched twice in New York, but both outings were against the Yankees during Bush's Blue Jays days. He is 2-1 despite a 6.75 ERA in three career starts against the Mets.
Mets: Needing some measure of length from their fifth starter after none of the previous four had survived the middle innings, the Mets received precisely that from Hernandez. Against a Marlins team that had averaged nearly eight runs per game heading into Saturday's game, Hernandez pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs -- one on a bloop, the other on the bullpen's inherited runner. For his career against the Brewers, Hernandez is 7-6 with a 3.77 ERA.Comment -

Royals: Meche, the Royals' veteran right-hander, was one inning away from a great outing against the Yankees his last time out. He surrendered one run through six inning before running into some tough luck and giving up three in the seventh. So instead of picking up his first win of the season, Meche had to settle for the no-decision in the Royals' 6-4 victory. Meche, who was the Royals' Opening Day starter for the third consecutive year, has 12 strikeouts in two starts against just two walks. Meche is 35-38 with a 4.71 ERA on the road in his career.
Rangers: Harrison was the losing pitching in the Rangers' 4-3 loss to the Tigers on Saturday, allowing four runs on nine hits and five walks in 5 2/3 innings. He struggled with his fastball command and had trouble hitting the outer part of the plate against right-handed hitters. This is his first start at home, where he was 5-2 with a 5.94 ERA in 10 starts last season. He beat the Royals in his only start against them last year, on Aug. 27. He held them to one earned run in 6 2/3 innings in a 3-2 victory.Comment -

Rockies: De La Rosa mixed an effective fastball and changeup during the first two-plus innings of his initial start, a home loss to the Phillies on Saturday. But he couldn't put hitters away with his changeup, started falling behind in the count with two outs, and wound up giving up five runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings. The Phillies also forced him to throw 99 pitches in that time.
Dodgers: Wolf took the Dodgers into the eighth inning in Sunday's win against the Diamondbacks, even though he felt he was pitching without an effective fastball. In a very young rotation, Wolf is the one experienced enough to make a quick adjustment and win a game even without his full repertoire. Wolf had command of his curveball and kept hitters off-balance with pinpoint changeup command.Comment -

Athletics: Outman gave up three runs, all earned, and six hits over 4 1/3 innings in his season debut Saturday against Seattle, getting no decision. Outman, 24, has never faced the Blue Jays. That's not surprising. He's faced just five teams (Mariners, Angels, Tigers, Royals and Rangers) in his brief Major League career. Outman came to the A's last July as part of the trade that sent starter Joe Blanton to Philadelphia. He went 1-2 with a 4.56 ERA with the A's in 2008, starting four games and making six appearances. He had 19 strikeouts with only eight walks. That strikeout-to-walk ratio mirrors his Minor League numbers. Throughout a Minor League career spanning 107 appearances from 2005-2008, Outman struck out 429 batters and walked 211.
Blue Jays: After a strong season debut, Purcey labored through an appearance against Cleveland on Sunday. The left-hander was overpowering in spurts -- evidenced by his 10 strikeouts -- but his control wavered and he issued six walks in his 4 2/3 innings. Purcey threw 113 pitches (66 strikes) and was charged with five runs, including four earned, on four hits in a loss. Purcey said he had trouble gripping the ball at times because of the dry conditions at Progressive Field. Purcey has never faced Oakland in his career.Comment -

Tigers: Verlander's second start of the season didn't last much longer than his first, with the Rangers chasing him after five innings and 97 pitches last Saturday. However, both Verlander and manager Jim Leyland pointed to a vast improvement in his pitches, both with good velocity and easier effort while regaining some movement, evidenced by his eight strikeouts against four walks. Leyland wants to see Verlander lasting around seven innings consistently within the next three to five starts, which makes Verlander's matchup with the Mariners a big stepping stone. The more outs he can get early in counts, the deeper he'll last into the game.
Mariners: The ace right-hander struck out a season-best eight batters in his last start, but didn't have the same command he had against the Twins in his Opening Day win against the Twins. Three of the seven hits Hernandez surrendered to the Athletics went for extra-bases and drove in four of the five runs, including a decisive two-run home run to Oakland slugger Jack Cust, the second of his career off Hernandez.Comment -

Fri 7:05 p.m. ET CLEAR. IN FROM LEFT 8-13 66 27 % Humid
Padres: Young went seven strong innings against the Giants in his last start, allowing just four hits and one unearned run in a 6-1 win. He walked one and struck out seven. Young retired the first 12 batters before giving up a single to Bengie Molina in the fifth inning. In his first start of the season, he retired nine of the first 11 batters he faced and struck out four in the first three innings. He had five strikeouts in that game, in which he pitched six innings, allowing five hits and two runs while walking two. Young has shown that his Cactus League play didn't matter much, as he had a 12.96 ERA. He didn't get his second victory last season until his sixth start.
Phillies: Hamels got off to a shaky start in his first game, giving up seven runs on 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings against the Rockies last week. Hamels had battled some arm problems in the spring and didn't pitch Opening Day, but has repeatedly insisted that he's fine. Hamels was the MVP in the Phillies' World Series victory over the Rays last fall and is looking to get back to that form.Comment -
