In football, you have turnovers and huge plays like blocked FG returns/kickoff returns or whatever.

In basketball, you have shooting in general really, more specifically 3 point shooting.

When you look at a box score, what do you look at? My first thought would be runners left on base, but that was all I could really come up. Maybe a reliever giving up a ton of runs or something?

I think BaBip is sort of designed to account for luck in hitting in general. Though its no hard and fast.

In a sport where you hit a ball coming 95MPH with a round wooden stick, theres going to be a ton of luck involved in virtually all stats.

believe it or not home runs are the luck make or breakers in MLB most totals are won and lost by the swing of a bat

true but power is a tangible skill to me. BABIP is a good one though.

Maybe not luck, but things you cant control. The freakin bullpen. Nothing is worse than winning the entire game then the bullpen giving up the lead

true, just wondering what you can look at with a slumping team and say "maybe they were just unlucky". I use this quite a lot in other sports to find undervalued teams/plays

Maybe a team that always good contact on the ball(rarely strikes out) but seems to always hit the ball right to a defender

Its funny, ive played sports my entire life, even collegiate, but baseball is the only one I played that I literally didn't know all the rules or terminology haha

Baseball is amazing with all of the stats to me. Of course I can look at Ken Pom and things like that and be right at home. Probably just my lack of baseball experience, stats wise

Home Run to Fly Ball rate (HR/FB) is the ratio of how many home runs are hit against a pitcher for every fly ball they allow. Home runs are obviously not good for a pitcher, and a pitcher can reduce…

Batting Average on Balls In Play (BABIP) measures how often a ball in play goes for a hit. A ball is “in play” when the plate appearance ends in something other than a strikeout, walk, hit batter…

One of common themes you’ll hear around statistically inclined sites is, “Player Y has gotten lucky/unlucky so far this season and here’s why…” I know when I first started reading here and at other…

wins and losses as a starting pitcher.

not saying you will win very many games without talent but often times a pitcher may pitch really well but not accumulate alot of wins bc of poor run support and a bad bullpen.

Yep - So many wins and loses are determined by things out of your control. I mean look at Samardz for the first 2/3 of the season - couldn't buy a win and was lights out.
