ATP Stuttgart Thursday: Stakhovsky vs Del Bonis
Del Bonis scored a very impressive win against Florian Mayer in R1, whist Stakhovsky crawled over the finish line in a deciding set tiebreak against another challenger tour player in Jaroslav Pospisil.

However, Del Bonis' results have been pony all year. After having a pretty decent 2010 as a developing player, he has had bad results this year. Despite being stronger on clay, his best result of the year came on the hardcourts at the very start of the year. Since that tournament he has sputtered, more often than not getting routined in straight sets in early rounds by players on the secondary Challenger tour.

Although clay is Stakhovsky's weakest surface, he has produced some decent results on the dirt this year. He has had solid wins against Montanes, Hanescu, Isner and Nishikori this year, and it has usually taken an elite player (2 losses to Ferrer) or an accomplished clay court 'specialist' (losses to Monaco, Starace and Gil) to beat him this year on clay.

While Del Bonis certainly has a track record of being a clay court specialist, he is not yet in the same bracket as the players that Stak has lost to this year. I know he beat a streaking top 20 player in R1, but I see that as nothing other than a freak result.

I feel the price on Stakhovsky is extremely generous. Had Del Bonis not had such an easy victory in R1, along with Stak just making it into the 2nd round I feel we would have been looking at Stak being priced closer to -150.

    Stakhovsky at -110

    Thoughts welcome.

Good write up. I think it truly will be a pick em. Line is accurate. I'll take my shot on the german challenger +195 against Fognini.

you're crazy, bonis has looked VERY impressive, he completely destroyed florian on his court. also stak is on the davis cup too and if you've noticed the trend alot of them have been leaving tournys early. also stakk struggled to beat Pospisil lol. not impressed at him at all.

      Bonis +105

I think you might over-estimate Del Bonis from one match here. Mayer didn't look much interested in that match. Del Bonis' season on clay and in general has been pretty sub-par from the looks of it. Pospisil is no slouch by the way ... his season has gone downhill somewhat, but he won a clay Challenger early in the year and last year was one of the best Challenger level guys on dirt. I agree with the OP here in that I think this is on Stakhovsky to win or lose. His serve could make a huge difference here.

Yeah but he still won. That's a key for me. Certainly doesn't mean he might come out and lay a clunker, but with his serve he can probably play sub-par and still have a shot.

Staks really doesn't like clay - you can tell in his attitude on court. Makes pinning down his chances near impossible imo.
