    Wimbledon Haiku
So my sister's birthday is today. She teaches Japanese.

    I made her a haiku

It was about today, about her. It wasn't very good

So I wrote another one after four grueling hours at work. It was about vapidity of my job. About how tedious it is to sit at your computer (not making bets or watching sports) 9 hours a day, 5-6 days a week. She liked it a lot more.

The point is — you are more likely to come up with a good haiku poem if you are passionate about the subject.

So I'm going to use this thread to post a bunch of haikus. About Wimbledon. About tennis. About gambling.

I'm almost finished with my first couple of poems. Will post before lunch break is over. Obviously, it's about rain.

    Everyone is welcome to join!

for those too lazy to read that wikipedia article and willing to try...

HAIKU is a short poem usually (but not necessarily) following the 5-7-5 pattern (or 5-7-5 5-7-5 pattern)... ideally, it's about nature, about nature changing (e.g. winter coming after fall), about sound or light (e.g. a sound of a frog jumping into the water), and about human emotion reacting to the above (e.g. becoming sad because of thick fog coming down)

    here are some examples:

    old pond...
    a frog leaps in
    water’s sound

    the first cold shower
even the monkey seems to want
    a little coat of straw

    'Sky, don't hog the moon,'
    says Michael Beasley,
    'I'm open!'

    Sunset reddens
    both the wheat fields
    and Javale McGee

    Swifts
    circling the chimney—
    Derrick Rose.

    Flowers offered
    to Joe Crawford
    dropped into a basket.

(25 minutes ago) 11:26: The Queue Today has captured the public’s imagination. News just in: the Queue is packed and turning people away. Wimbledon will be completely full to the brim today.

                a Sterling sun is bright
                she longs to get inside
                a mile long queue

                it rains no more
