Thanks to the insane heat here throwing all of our plans for the day and night for a loop, I'm doing the scores manually tonight as I keep getting alerted that the Tennis Channel has mis-scored a few results. If when I post your name it's in bold it's just an alert for me that yours needs to be done manually at the end of the tourney. I'm going to post round by round so just bear with me, and I'll do the same for the women after I do the men

Yes, the totals for the men's seems ok (well I only checked my entry lol). But something is definitely amiss with the women's scores, not totaling those properly - perhaps why the whatif scenarios are not showing properly either.

they didnt even offer up a prize for main contest, cheap buggers brackets were slower than usual update , i was able get what if last night very strange

Yeah it looks like they fixed the Fognini error. I won't worry about doing the men's tonight then... if anyone spots an issue just let me know and I'll go through it then. The women are going to take ages as there really are a lot wrong and I can't figure out yet where the issue is but if I don't have to do both tonight then I obviously prefer not to as I still have to do my normal forum stuff.

Yes, as I've said many times, I do wish the later matches didn't count for quite as much. If the winner is not someone too obscure (like it was in the women's), unless you pick the right winner you will never finish in the Top 10 even though you may have picked way better than other folks in the first + second rounds and thereby having way more overall correct picks in totality.

Years ago pre TC we had a different format but it just became easier to go along with theirs as people also entered the main contests too. I’ve benefited and also suffered thanks to the heavy weighting of the latter rounds but it also does make sense... to start with 128 players and come up with the two who will be in the finals despite injuries, weather (heat here but also including numerous rain delays at some Slams) and whatever else may happen, people should be rewarded for choosing those two and eventually one out of 128.

When I’m home tonight I’ll post the final results for those not checking the site and will send off the top ten of both to be paid tomorrow. Thanks again for entering everyone and putting up with a few glitches this time around!

google searching tennis bracket challenges does not give out a vast number of results

its seems this site global tennis network has something where u can create bracket challenges, might be something to look into if tourny topia doesn't shape up, going to have to write them some more nice emails see what's going on

Thanks for running these shari - they are definitely a ton of fun whatever the exact format might be. Your efforts are definitely appreciated!

I agree with what you said that people who pick the final two/winner should be rewarded, I just think that 30 points for the winner vs only 1 point for a correct first round is too big of a difference - makes the early rounds too inconsequential (they amount to tiebreaking essentially at most).

Something such as by round this number of points for each correct pick: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12

or something of that sort (lot of little changes could be made), I think would still greatly reward those who pick the final two + winner correctly, but at the same time give the early rounds a much bigger overall weight, and I like that.

I've also felt this way in general about March Madness contests, that I feel the later picks, while they should count for more, still count for way too much in comparison to the early picks. Again, if the winner is not some obscure team, if you don't pick the winner you have absolutely no chance to finish near the top, and that gives that one pick too much weight I feel - should be more about whose overall bracket is more accurate than who happened to get the winner correct.

I mean the way it's structured now if two people pick the same two players in Finals but different winners, even if the one who picked the wrong winner got ten more correct in round one than the other (and therefore surely more correct in round two), they would probably lose between the two of them, and again that feels like too much weight on that pick.

All of this is just my opinion again though - others surely might disagree with me!

The best point structure I can think of is this simple one:

1st round: 1 point
2nd round: 2 points
3rd round: 3 points
4th round: 4 points
Quarterfinals: 5 points
Semifinals: 8 points
Final: 10 points

Rewards late-round picks just fine, yet keeps the point differential between early rounds compared to the latter rounds reasonable.

I'm pretty sure if I remember correctly I can change the scoring for private contests so if they get their act together over there when the French rolls around I'll ditch their scoring and then we can collectively decide on the best weighting structure.

I really want to avoid the old way we did it where everything was manual and it took us not only hours to enter but also for me to score every two days. It's definitely not feasible with this many people entering so fingers crossed they just dropped the ball this time and will go back to normal for the next one!
