i will soon be heading down under so i just want to ask if there is any sports betting facility in Brisbane, where i can just walk in and place my bets then claim my winnings afterwards?

if none, where do you place your bets?

There are TAB shops everywhere in Brisbane (state bookmaker), but most people who want to win will use the online bookies - Sportsbet, luxbet, CentreBet, sports alive and so on

what do you mean by that bolded statement? is it because TAB shops offer lower odds? are these online bookies located in australia?

Yes the online bookies are australian licensed. TAB has higher margins -- sometimes they will have the best odds, but not often. http://www.tab.com.au/ has the locations etc.

what sports would you be interested in betting on?

the Queensland TAB is pretty ordinary in regard to odds and limits and mostly concentrate on local racing and sports - but you can just walk in bet in cash

to bet with other agencies you'd need to open an online or telephone betting account but depending on your length of stay that probably wouldn't be worth your while - ID requirements are very strict

that TAB is not a lot of use if you are only visiting Queensland

they do offer US sports but the odds and limits at the Queensland TAB can be very disappointing compared with what you may be used to

Tabcorp which runs the TABs in NSW and Victoria are somewhat better but if you really want to get good odds and limits you would be better off with online accounts and if your prime interest is US sports then the obvious options are Pinnacle and Matchbook rather than Aussie books - but be aware that live betting online is not legal in Australia - not sure if Pinnacle and Matchbook adhere to that though

If this would be the case then i think i would settle for those two books that youve mentioned. im not familiar with matchbook though. is this a good book which doesnt impose limits right off the bat?

btw, do you have any link where i can read the legalities of online betting in australia? coz as youve said, live betting is illegal. i wonder why

Matchbook is a betting exchange (like Betfair but is superior for US sports) so you won't ever be limited. You can almost always get better odds than at Pinnacle for straight betting (ML, spreads and totals). No parlays or props.

Online betting is perfectly legal in Australia. You are free to bet with Australian or overseas books. Nobody will hassle you. The only restriction is for live betting online on sports (racing is ok) because ignorant politicians don't understand the distinction between "problem gamblers" addicted to poker machines and sports punters. You can however pick up the phone to your bookie and bet in play. I don't know of any links which would be useful because it really isn't an issue here.

Online gaming however is illegal. Although there are some Australian sites, they are not permitted to accept Australian players! I don't play casinos or poker but understand that most overseas sites won't bar Australians and I've never heard of (and don't expect to) anyone ever being prosecuted for this "crime". But then again perhaps it's the casinos rather than the players who are breaking the law. I don't know, nor care, as it isn't relevant to me.

If you are looking to place all your bets in person with cash, then TAB is your only choice. If you are going to be betting online there's no reason to use TAB, there are many better options out there but it can't hurt to have another spare account if you ever need it.

Sites hosted in Australia aren't allowed to offer it. You can use a VPN to get around it on Betfair if you really need to. To live bet with sportsbet/sportingbet/etc. you will need to do it over the phone (like Hareeba said)

We can bet online normally with Pinnacle, bet365, etc...

My understanding is the laws restrict the books from offering it, rather than restricting us from being able to place live bets online.

                            i just want to clarify.

so live betting is illegal if done thru the internet but it is ok to do so if you call the bookie (telebetting)?

also, is this legality issue on live betting pertains to just the aussie sportsbooks or to any online SB?

It's not illegal because the option isn't there (with Aus based books)

Live betting is only available (with Aus based books) over the phone, or online during half time breaks etc.

also, is this legality issue on live betting pertains to just the aussie sportsbooks or to any online SB?
For people in Australia or in general? The only restrictions I'm aware of are Australian based books offering live betting over the internet to Australian based customers.

We can place a normal live bet online with a non Australian based book, just like anyone else can from a different country.

correct - the Aussie books just can't offer it online in play, but you may well find that books in other countries don't stop you and frankly I doubt you've got anything to fear by betting with them in play

to be honest I don't know whether the law makes it illegal for a punter to place a bet or only for a betting agency to offer it but the only ones in practice who have anything to fear would be the books - it would be just far too impractical to enforce it by looking to prosecute punters
