    What's "ridiculous"?

    the law?
perhaps, but the US has them too

    the raids?
"As well as having clear connections to organised crime, illegal soccer gambling is also linked with corruption, money laundering and prostitution," he said, declaring a blow had been struck against underworld gangs.

the long proven inevitable result of prohibition

"officers had raided more than 800 illegal gambling dens that had handled more than 155 million dollars in bets."

these are people who accept bets, acting as a bookmaker, not people who place wagers.

Interpol executive director Jean-Michel Louboutin: "As well as having clear connections
to organised crime, illegal soccer gambling is also linked with corruption, money laundering and prostitution".

THIS GUY KNOWS VERY WELL THAT GAMBLING IS NOT CONSIDERED A CRIME FROM THE SOCIETY'S POINT OF VIEW,AND HE MUST LINK IT WITH REAL CRIMES TO SUPPORT HIS ACTIONS.

Doing this everything can be a crime if you link it with real crimes.

Does the Interpol director know that only the law can define what is a crime?

Noticed he didn't say these betting establishments, just that in general soccer gambling is linked which gives more weight to Tachi's post above...

"The information gathered will now be reviewed and analysed to determine the potential involvement of other individuals or gangs across the region and beyond," he warned.
umm... if this is organized crime, then why is there potential involvement instead of we will analyze the data to make future arrests or something along those lines. It is like the whole story is arrest everyone, confiscate everything, and then let's sort this out and see if we can charge anyone.

My person favorite quote of the story:
In Malaysia, for example, sports betting was only made legal last month -- angering conservative Islamists -- but the licences were not ready in time for the World Cup and a police task force was assigned to lead a crackdown.
So basically it is legal, but they were going to arrest people anyway and sort it out later.

Lastly, why are there so many misspelled words in this article?

in some jurisdictions all betting is illegal

in others there are legal operators with whom you can bet

in most there are illegal operators
illegal bookies flourish in India, doing massive business on cricket

the problem always with large illegal operators is that they are connected to criminals .. they simply wouldn't survive otherwise

There are no gambling laws in the world any more oppressive than the Wire Act and UIGEA.

the corruption is the government using it's authority to steal from individuals through the enforcement of religiously perverted laws.

Looks like the world is now starting to realize what we have known for decades... that gambling, particularly sports betting, will lead to the downfall of society. Many thanks to the government for protecting us from such evil. Now if you will excuse me, I have to swing by 7-11 and pickup some scratch-off tickets on my way to the horse races. After that I think I will stop by one of the bars near my house for some late night interactive Keno.
