Why was gambling banned in the usa?

made illegal well before online

was just a way to try to catch organized crime in something black and white.

in the ways it was made it illegal, it just wasn't able to be taxed and regulated.

which is why sports gambling is illegal but casinos, horse racing, bingo, lottery ect are not.

From what I understand it's not illegal for US residents to gamble online, it's illegal for banks to fund it and Its illegal to take bets from US customers. Atleast that is what I gather. These cokksukker politicians don't have a penetrating clue. It's funny to me that they prohibit gambling, but then they want to tax it. Ironic huh? All politicians are nitwit fukks. One thing you should remember when thinking about politicians is that they get paid that salary for the rest of their life. No retirement or anything. If you are a Senator for a term, you can sit on your ass the rest of your life and get paid that salary. United States is a fukking joke now.

Sports betting is illegal, and like someone said...money from US banks and using US telephone lines to make these sports bets I believe, is "illegal." (Not 100% sure about that)

but "gambling" isn't.
You can play the lottery, play certain casino games, play certain card games, play parimutuels etc. etc. but not sports....except in Las Vegas of course.

why was sports betting made illegal? this is all speculation but...
cause it's lucrative. organized crime controlled(controls) most of the outs. the US government doesn't want to tax it nationally, or isn't quite sure how to. too many horror stories to make the positive case out of it.

We're all really hoping for a closer city to legalize sports betting. Atlantic City 2013, here we come!!

I think there is something about using "US telephone lines" to make sports bets being illegal. Whether the federal government enforces these laws is a different matter, as we all know.

i was referring to the legal status of domestically wagering US currency on the outcome of a sports event....that's illegal regardless of semantics and enforcement.

and on a side note, whether you can prove something or not is one of the reasons the US justice system is a complete joke.

There is no federal law against placing a bet. Many states have laws against gambling (mostly misdemeanors). Accepting a bet (i.e. being the bookmaker) is a federal felony, and often a state felony.

It's not illegal for a person to make a bet, it is illegal in the United States to run a betting operation. That is about as dumb as it gets, but hey, I think the United States is on it's last leg anyway.

Ok, making a gentleman's bet for 100 on a game at home in your living room is not illegal, yes. But contacting a local clandestine sportsbook to make your standard sports bet with odds and what not...is.

I'm not one of these guys who claim to know everything about anything but I don't think my assertions are off the wall here.

Whether the FBI will knock your door down for making a $250 bet on HEAT-13 with Jimmy the bookie is another story.

This is how I understand the laws in the US. I was hoping JayLA could/would come to that conclusion on his own so he could learn.

No federal law against placing a sports bet. But "gambling" is a misdemeanor in most states. Got it. Still illegal. Semantics.

Nevada, Delaware,and Oregon are the few states that can authorize sportsbooks, I think.

The internet is not public property. It's a series of privately-owned networks connected together. Thus, the internet does not belong to the people.

I'm not sure "dumb" is the correct description for differentiating between the supposed "exploiter" (guy charging "vig"), and the weak stupid moronic illiterate drooling gambler - clearly the "exploited". (Unless the "exploited" understands the concept of EV, and the difference between what happens when you bet +EV vs. betting -EV).
