Jeff Sherman, assistant director of the race and sportsbook at the Las Vegas Hotel, says he estimates that the game shifted $15 million in Nevada alone and also concurs with Avello that the worldwide number, including offshore sportsbooks and in Europe, is worth about 10 times more.

#37Bingo.
The replacement refs make mistakes. So do the regular refs. The one noticeable difference? The regular crew tends to favor the same (public) teams year after year. Bottomline for those 'wronged' public teams. If you don't want to lose the game on the last play, decide the game before that.
And bettors complaining en masse about losing a bet on the last play is hilarious. As if that has never happened before. Goes with the territory and evens out over time. Crocodile tears and gambling are a bad mix. Game is over. Move on.Comment -

Again this isn't to disparage anyone who bet either side of this game as it was a travesty. But seriously do not bet this crap for more than $5 until the refs come back. Why torture yourself?Comment -

The worst call I saw last night (and there were a LOT to choose from) was the pass interference penalty on the Green Bay corner (Shields I believe) on a long pass when Seattle had a 1rst and 25. He had inside position, was looking back at the ball the whole time, and was grabbed by the receiver. A quality ref NEVER calls pass interference on the defense there. So stop with the "all refs make mistakes" nonsense. Of course all refs make mistakes. But when one crew makes 40% more bad calls, and makes more important missed calls, that would never be called by a better crew, THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE.
One game means a lot for a team in a 16 game season. That might affect their seeding, or even if they make the playoffs.
I didn't have a nickel on either side last night, and I'm not a loyal supporter of either team. I was actually drawn in to watching the game after seeing the 1rst quarter because it looked like a rare NFL game that had some defense and was a tight "old style" type of game, which I like to see, especially when most games these days resemble a video game with scores every possession. After watching 3 hours of football, I felt cheated with the fiasco that ensued in the last 7:00 of playing time. I felt the same way that I did when I saw the movie Logans Run, that i had wasted a few hours of my life that I'll never get back.
Now as far as bettors complaining, that statement I'll agree with you on. One game should never be that big for you (unless you're on the end of a futures bet where you might have staked 1k to win 40k).
Bottom line, the NFL is a disgusting organization whose sole purpose these days is to maximize revenue and control. I don't watch the NFL too much since I had confirmation that it was their hired lobbyist, Martin Gold, who was the force behind the passing of the UIGEA on behalf of the NFL, and he is still an adviser to Jon Kyl. The NFL still spends millions every year to keep internet gambling shut down, and they are responsible for costing me 25K-50k a year in poker earnings at PokerStars. They need to be exposed for the louses that they are.Comment -

#46What about all the bad calls earlier in the game that went in the Packers favor? Those don't matter? How come when a team loses a game at the end because of a player everybody says they didn't lose because of that play, that they could have played better before. But when it's the refs at the end, it's not about what happened earlier?Comment -

#49I've initiated a ********** against NFL.com. $269.00 annual subscription purchased a few weeks ago. All I'm arguing is they sell a monthly package. So okay: Amount paid - Monthly Rate = Refund. Cancel and refund me the difference because your product sucks. They refuse and told them I'm getting the money back either way, why not be reasonable. But they refused. So I explained in exact details I'm not satisfied with the product, their refunds terms are unreasonable, I'm asking for refund on unused portion because no happy with the product and they refuse. Attached a long explanation, faxed and uploaded it with card disputes.Comment -

#50Do you think most red blooded American males could actually keep an eye on the play in the lingerie league? Only homo refs could accurately call plays in that league.Comment -

#52Yep I agree. The extent of my NFL betting so far has been in BTP and I'm lucky if I'm even hitting 40%. I pick teams I like ie I went to a lot of Packers games, used to get Detroit tv living in Canada, etc
There's a reason the old timers try to warn people every year how sharp NFL lines are and how books salivate waiting for the influx of cash from those who think they've finally figured out a system. Bet small and focus on other sports or be prepared to cry at one point or another.Comment -

#53If that is true I'd like to see some evidence. I always thought it was the Vegas lobby. I also suspect they're behind the mostly unfounded negative publicity against horse racing, earlier this year in the NY Times. Clearly a bought-and-paid-for article, but by who? Turns out tracks can get themselves out of the hard times by putting slot machines, etc, on the premises. Suddenly everything turns around. Bigger purses, better races, etc. Good times are back. The only guys who wouldn't want to see that, or anything that would keep people from flying into Vegas? By comparison, the NFL has no reason at all to go against gambling. What for? They know 'everybody' bets on the games. Cutting off gambling would cut the audience in half.
I don't have time to dig out all the Martin Gold stuff, but you can google him with NFL and UIGEA, and you'll get some stuff. But the NFL still spends millions lobbying congress on internet gambling, and if you want to see some hard evidence, I'll give you this link to one of their lobbying reports for a quarter where they spent $300,000 lobbying against online gambling (and a few other issues). This is a required document they must file. I hope the link works.
