Is there a better ranking system of national teams?

I know that FIFA takes the last 4 years of play into account in determining their top teams.

Teams #10 (Croatia), #11 (Russia) and #12 (Egypt) aren't even playing in the World Cup while #5 (Italy) and #9 (France) have already been eliminated.

These rankings mean shyte.

Just ignore these rankings, they're a joke. I've heard that these ELO rankings are better http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Football_Elo_Ratings but the main problem with any international football rankings is the relative strength of each team's opponents. There always seems to be an imbalance from teams in weaker footballing federations.

So what's your point Fishhead? It may or may not be the proper way of doing it - going back exactly 4 years, but I'm saying that the actual rankings themselves are absolutely out of whack.

You have New Zealand (#78) and North Korea (#105) playing in this tournament, but you have teams 10 through 12 not playing, while 5 and 9 have been eliminated - and 9 went out in horrible form.

I'm just saying that these rankings don't truly reflect the relative strength of football teams worldwide and no, I don't think there's another system that ranks these teams, none that I know of at least.

On a last point, #3 Portugal was over 30:1 to win the whole thing before the start of the World Cup, while #8 England was 6:1.

If anything, the UEFA, or European teams, should be ranked higher than what they actually are. The European teams, as a group, are the strongest in the world. In determining the rankings, their place is highly dependent on how well they fare against each other, since the majority of the games they play are against each other, and not against other teams in weaker federations.

As a result, teams in weaker federations, such as New Zealand in the OFC, are given inflated rankings, because they beat up on bad competition. Granted, New Zealand did perform relatively well in the World Cup, but that was a bit of an anomaly.

That's why the Euro is a tougher tournament to win than the World Cup, you have only strong European teams without the so called "group leaders" in the other federations.

FIFA rankings are nowhere near reflective of how these countries shake out. Play more matches, get more points.

The FiFA rankings aren't predictive rankings - they have no direct bearing on how these teams compare in the future, only how they've done in the past.

Therefore, looking forward, the FIFA rankings will have serious holes based on which direction these teams have moved recently --
