Maybe he was fearful of what would happen to him and his family if they got their asses beaten badly by Brazil. "Don't embaress the country" kind of shit. Last time N Korea were in the world cup was 28 years ago. That team was eliminated in the quarterfinals after losing despite being up 3-0 after thirty minutes. Upon arrival back to N Korea, the players "disappeared" and were sent to labour camps.

please read this yourself and see how ignorant you sound. Labor camps my ass, where in the world did you get that information. Second of all that world cup was 44 years ago and many of those players are national heroes.

this is from an article on the web: "At home, they’re already heroes, bestowed with medals and merit citations and honored on postage stamps unveiled last week to commemorate the team’s success in qualifying for the World Cup."

Majority of our country is so ignorant and careless as to what happens in the rest of the world. The philosophy that everything is great here, and everything sucks everywhere else needs to change quick.

He isnt ignorant. North Korea is FILLED with labour camps and has no food at all.

As for him being fearful I doubt it, they said he played football in Japan, drove around in a silver hummer and rarely visited North Korea. He also had to fight to get his citizenship changed as he was born as a South Korean citizen, it looks like he really wanted to be recognised as a North Korean believe it or not.

BBC documentary "The Game of Their Lives". Some other soccer sites.

But he could also have cried because last and the only time N Korea participated in a World Cup before this one, their national anthem was not played before their games. Politics and such. And now it was. Justice, eh?

I wasn't saying that there is no labor camps there. I was saying that the North Koreans didn't get sent to labor camps after losing in quarterfinals in 66. They weren't expected to even make it out of the group and they became national heroes after they indeed did it.

My parents grew up in a communist country, and it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

and even the guy who made the 2002 movie said that he found no evidence that any of the players were mistreated and he mentioned that he knew for certain that they were treated as heroes back then, and to this date.

                    He is Tae-se Jung.
Even though he is playing for north korea, he is a citizen of SOUTH korea. There is a long story.
He was born and raised in Japan, and I believe he is a permanent resident of Japan with his whole family.
Surely he will return to Japan right after the WC.
Home country and patriotism is very special to him, I think.

a docu came out in my country like two weeks ago or something on these players. a camera crew got a **** somehow, and tracked down the players of that team in korea. kind of a WC background special. they hadn't "disappeared" or mistreated in any way, those rumours were completely made-up.

To be playing in the WORLD CUP for the first time in 44 years representing your country knowing your the best player on our countries team who is the only one who has any hope of scoring for his team and be given to the chance to play one of the best teams in the world is a big deal
