                                Copa Mundial 1950

Copa Mundial 1950 Brasil June 24- July 16

Brazil was the host for the first World Cup after World War II. In the FIFA congress in Luxembourg in July 1946, Brazil was the only candidate to host the World Cup in 1950, although it was originally planned to be held in 1949. The decision to stage the fourth World Cup in South America stemmed from the fact that a large part of Europe was still in turmoil after the war. The choice of Brazil was to be a good one. They were reigning South American champions and interest in football was reaching remarkable levels of fanaticism in that vast country. FIFA was confident Brazil would stage a spectacular carnival of football. At this 1946 congress, FIFA also announced that, from 1950, the World Cup trophy would in the future be known as the Jules Rimet Cup, although it was subsequently referred to as the Jules Rimet Trophy. This was to mark Rimet's 25th anniversary as FIFA president.

This 1950 Cup also finally saw the entrance of British teams. After Great Britain had beaten Rest Of Europe 6-1 in a match in 1947, England arrived as one of the hottest favourites to win. This tournament had a strange schedule. Some nations withdrew from the cup after the draw of various reasons. India, for example withdrew because FIFA wouldn't let them play in bare feet! This made the groups look weird, with two groups of four, one with three and one with only two teams. The groupwinners would progress to a final pool where the winners were crowned champions.
One of the biggest shocks in World Cup history came on June 29th when England were beaten by USA by 1-0. Uruguay who were lucky enough to only have one opponent in the groupstage, took advantage of that and trashed Bolivia by 8-0 with their starplayer Schiaffino scoring four of the goals. Sweden and Spain also showed class and topped their groups.
This World Cup has been the only one without a real final. When Uruguay met Brazil in the last match, the hosts needed only a draw to win the World Cup. They had beaten Sweden by 7-1 and Spain by 6-1 in their two earlier games in the group and were favourites. Uruguay had drawn against Spain and beaten Sweden by a single goal. A World record 200.000 spectators watched the game and couldn't believe the outcome. Uruguay stunned the crowd and won 2-1 after coming from behind.

A world record crowd greeted the teams and, despite efforts to restrict the capacity to 150.000, the official attendance was just short of 200.000, although the actual paying attendance was 172.772. There were very few in the overcrowded stadium who expected anything but a Brazilian success. Even the many Uruguayan fans present must have given their team little chance.
Brazil came to what was effectively the World Cup final having scored 13 goals in their two final pool matches. Uruguay had scored a mere five against the same opposition and had struggled on both occasions. Brazil were 1/10 on favourites to win and stood to collect mammoth bonuses of around £10.000 if they lifted the trophy.
Needing only a draw to win the title, Brazil could not resist the temptation to attack, but the Uruguayans defended solidly and kept Ademir and company at bay. After a goalless first half, Ademir slipped the ball to Friaca, who put the hosts in front two minutes into the second half. Then came a tactical error. Coach Flavio Costa gave instructions for Jair to drop back into defence. The instructions never reached him and Brazil continued to play in their usual way. Being one goal in front and only needing a draw, Brazil were in a good position.
Uruguay's 34 year old captain Obdulio Varela refused to give up and kept driving his team forward. Right winger Ghiggia was a dangerman and the Brazilian left-half, Bigode, gave him too much room in the second half. After one such lapse, the winger gathered a pass from his skipper Varela, beat his man and crossed for Schiaffino to head home the equallizer after 66 minutes.
Despite allowing Uruguay to level the scores, Brazil still attacked but their efforts failed to produce any more goals. By now, Uruguay were attacking more and more and wing-half Victor Andrade, whose uncle was in the 1930 winning team, set up many attacking moves. With 11 minutes remaining,

Ghiggia got round Bigode once more and this time, when the defence was expecting another centre, he ran for the goal and slotted the ball in between the near post and goalkeeper Barbosa.
A little more than 10 minutes later, the referee blew his whistle for full time. The improbable and "impossible" had happened. Brazil had lost and Uruguay joined Italy as two-times winners of the World Cup. The Brazilian fans openly wept in the Maracana and in the streets of Rio. Despite their anguish, the Brazilian fans inside the giant stadium nevertheless found time to warmly applaude the victors as they paraded the trophy. It brought an end to a three-week Brazilian carnival. The final result may not have been what the home fans wanted, but it signalled the rebirth of the World Cup after a 12-year absence.

                                                Copa Mundial 1954 Switzerland

Copa Mundial 1954 Switzerland June 16- July 4

Switzerland was the obvious choice of venue for the fifth World Cup. FIFA's headquarters were in Zurich and 1954 marked the 50th anniversary of its formation. The Swiss had been granted the tournament at FIFA's first post-war congress in 1946, and they had spent eight years building new stadiums for the great occasion. They did not live up to their promise and were not really up to the organizational requirements of such a tournament. Nevertheless, the competition proved to be a financial success, despite the fact that most stadiums had small capacities. The tournament received limited TV coverage for the first time and the Swiss showed a piece of marketing know-how by having special commemorative coins minted.

FIFA now had a new president, Rodolphe Seeldrayers of Belgium, and once more the governing body found it necessary to change the format, reverting to a pool and knock-out system. The 16 teams were divided into four groups with two teams in each group seeded. The two seeded teams, strangely enough, did not need to play eachother in the group. Also remarkable was that extra time was needed if the scores were level in the group matches!
In this first World Cup held in Europe after World War II, Hungary were the new force to be reckoned with. They banged in goals with a frequence never seen before in a World Cup. They beat West Germany 8-3 and South Korea 9-0. Never has a team been a bigger favourite to win the cup than this. The world was introduced to players like Puskas, Kocsis, Hidegkuti and Czibor. Another team among the favourites was Uruguay. They still hadn't lost a match in World Cup history at this stage and their run continued also after the groupstage after beating Czechoslovakia and Scotland.
The quarterfinal match between Austria and Switzerland brought a new World Cup record. Austria won 7-5, that's the highest number of goals ever in a World Cup match, it's still unbeaten. Uruguay beat England 4-2, and Hungary beat Brazil by the same score in one of the most brutal matches ever. It's later dubbed "The Battle of Berne", as three players got sent off and the fighting continued also after the final whistle. West Germany who had recovered after they got trashed by Hungary in the first round, beat Yugoslavia. The semifinal between Hungary and Uruguay, who participated in a World Cup on European soil for the first time, is regarded to be one of the best ever in a World Cup. Hungary won 4-2 after extra-time and with that, Uruguay's unbeaten run was broken. The Germans had hit topform and trashed their neighbours Austria by 6-1 and the stage was set for a great final. Austria recovered quickly and surprisingly beat Uruguay and secured the bronzemedals. The final turned out to be dramatic. Hungary were leading 2-0 early on and everything looked safe, but then West Germany in well-known style pulled back both goals and scored a winner to win their first World Cup.

The Golden Team - The Magical Magyars

Das Wunder von Bern’. The Miracle of Bern saw the Germans pitted against the ‘Mighty Magyars’. Unbeaten in their previous 32 games, lead by a strike-force of Puskas and Hidegkuti, they had previously defeated England at Wembley 6-3, becoming the first non-UK team to do so at the famous stadium. They won 7-1 in the return game in Budapest. Legendary coach Josef Herberger was famous for conjuring up phrases such as ‘The ball is round and the game lasts for 90 minutes’, played his reserves that lost 8-3 in the first round. The Hungarians raced into a two goal lead in the first 8 minutes, through the unfit Puskas and Czibor. The Germans, playing with Adidas’s revolutionary removable studs, had an advantage in the ‘Fritz Walter’ (rainy) weather, named after their star player, whose best performances came ironically against the literary idea of pathetic fallacy.

A packed Wankdorf Stadion saw West Germany and Hungary battle in one of the finest finals the World Cup had seen. In appealing weather, the wet conditions were not ideal for football, but both sides displayed great skills in a game that was a repeat of their first round match, which Hungary won 8-3. Then of course, West German coach Sepp Herberger shrewdly fielded a weakened team. Now two weeks later, it was a different story.

Puskas insisted on playing, even though he wasn't fully fit, and the "Galloping Major" put his side ahead after only six minutes, when he followed up a Kocsis shot that rebounded to him. Two minutes later, Czibor scored after a back-pass by the German left-back Werner Kohlmeyer, was not gathered by keeper Turek. Hungary led 2-0 after only 8 minutes and there could not have been anybody prepared to back a West German victory at this stage. But what a turnaround the crowd was about to witness.

After 10 minutes, Morlock reduced the arrears when he latched on to a great pass from left-winger Schäfer which split the Hungarian defence.

A mistake by the Hungarian keeper Grosics in the 18th minute allowed Rahn to equallize from a corner. The winger had been recalled for international duty for the first game with Hungary and had turned out to be one of the stars of the German team.
Hungary came close to restoring their lead in the second half. Hidegkuti hit the post, Kocsis hit the bar, Kohlmeyer cleared off the line and Turek brought off a series of great saves. Six minutes from the end, with the prospect of extra time looming, Rahn picked up a half-hearted clearance from Lantos. The German winger raced to the edge of the penalty area and hit the ball, which skidded low past the diving keeper. With two minutes remaining Puskas had a goal disallowed for offside. It was a close call and the Hungarians were still arguing after the final whistle was blown. When English referee Bill Ling blew for full time, it meant that Hungary had lost their first match since 1950 (30 games).

West Germany became the first unseeded team to win the World Cup and coach Sepp Herberger received much individual praise for the way he tactically guided his team to their ultimate honour.

                                                      Copa Mundial 1958 Sweden

Copa Mundial 1958 Sweden June 8- June 29

The World Cup stayed in Europe. Sweden hosted it and for the first time, the tournament received international television coverage. The format of the competition changed yet again. The 16 teams were split into four groups as in 1954, but now all the teams in the group played eachother. If teams tied for second and third place, the outcome was decided by a play-off. The teams were not seeded as in 1954, but each of the four groups contained one team from Western Europe, one from Eastern Europe, one from the United Kingdom and one from Latin America. England found themselves in a nightmare group with Brazil, Russia and 1954 bronze medalists, Austria. Hungary were no longer the force they were four years earlier.

Remarkable was the way Frenchman Juste Fontaine banged in goals. France scored 11 goals in the groupstage and qualified easily for the quarterfinals. Host nation Sweden qualified as did Wales from their group. Four British teams participated in this cup, and few would have expected that the two qualifying for the quarterfinals were Northern Ireland and Wales. England disappointingly and Scotland had to book the earliest possible flight home.
It was goals galore in the latest stage of the cup. The last four games in the cup saw 27 goals! Sweden beat West Germany in a tight semifinal, when the Germans were one man short the last 30 mins. Brazil finally stopped Fontaine & Co when Pelé scored a superb hat-trick in the 5-2 win.

After only four minutes, a magnificently worked goal by Sweden's "Italian connection" resulted in Liedholm scoring. This was the first time Brazil had been a goal behind and there were many who thought that, should this happen, then the ball-playing South Americans might crumble. But the goal only spurred the Brazilians on to greater things. The Swedish joy was short-lived and five minutes later, Garrincha beat his marker to cross the ball around the back of the Swedish defence for Vava to level the scores. After half an hour, Brazil scored an almost identical goal. Garrincha went down the flank, crossed at the back of the defence - and there was Vava again!
The second half once more belonged to Pelé, just as it did in the semifinal. Ten minutes after the restart he scored a great goal when he trapped the ball with his chest, rounded his man, and volleyed the ball into the net. Indecision in the Swedish defence after a Zagallo corner allowed the winger to follow up his own cross and ram home the fourth goal after 68 minutes. Ten minutes from time, Sweden scored a second goal when Simonsson finished off a move set up by Gunnar Gren. The match was well beyond Sweden's grasp, when Pelé in the last minute scored his second goal.

He started the move with a cheeky back-heel to Zagallo and then collected the winger's cross to head home Brazil's fifth.

The 1958 World Cup was the best and friendliest so far. As if to symbolize the spirit of the tournament, the Brazilians did a lap of honour carrying a huge Swedish flag. This tournament was also, perhaps, the most conclusive.

17 year old Pele crying in arms of his teammates. From left to right: Didi, Pelé, Gilmar and Orlando.

Copa Mundial 1962 Chile May 30- June 17

At the 1956 FIFA congress in Lisbon, three nations formally applied to host the 1962 World Cup - Argentina, Chile and West Germany. It was generally agreed that the tournament couldn't be held in Europe for the third successive time, so the Germans application was rejected. Argentina had better cards on their hands, because of their footballing heritage, larger stadiums and a tremendous interest in the game amongst its people. They were the hot favourites, but in May 1960 Chile was rocked by dreadful earthquakes which claimed 5000 lives. This tragedy, one would have thought, would have made Argentina even stronger candidates, but powerful pleading by the Chilean FA president, Carlos Dittborn, won the sympathy of FIFA and Chile were declared hosts for the 1962 tournament. Dittborn said: "We have nothing - that is why we must have the World Cup."

The Chileans set about building new stadiums and the magnificent National Stadium in Santiago was completed in time for the start of the tournament. For a poor nation, Chile did not disappoint FIFA as World Cup hosts. But the organizers could do little about the football.

This World Cup in Chile brought us little new, only one surprise and that was in the qualification. Sweden who were runners-up four years earlier failed to qualify. Brazil came to Chile with a team very much like the one who won in 1958. Only one major addition, Amarildo, who would take over after Pelé who got injured already in the second match. June 2nd was a black day in World Cup history. Chile met Italy in front of nearly 70.000 spectators in Santiago. They were witnessing discraceful scenes on the field as Latin temperament took over. Only two players were sent off, both Italians, but it should have been a lot more. The English referee Aston said the match was uncontrollable as the players were punching and kicking eachother. The teams needed the police to get escorted off the field safely. The hosts won the football match 2-0.
In the quarterfinals Yugoslavia and West Germany met again for the third time running. On both the previous occasions, the Germans had ended up winning. This time a Radakovic goal three minutes before time sent Yugoslavia through. Brazil with a sparkling Garrincha beat England, the Czechs beat Hungary and Chile surprisingly beat the Soviet Union and now found themselves in the semifinal. There they met Brazil who looked unstoppable and Garrincha and Vava scored two goals each to send Brazil to yet another final.

Czechoslovakia won the other semifinal against Yugoslavia. Chile captured the bronzemedals with a winning goal which was the last kick on the ball in the match. It was a great achievement for Chile who didn't expect their team to go this far.

Garrincha who was sent off in the semifinal eventually was allowed to play in the final. Even though Czechoslovakia took the lead early on, Brazil looked like the better team and came back and won the final 3-1. Even without Pelé for most of the tournament, Brazil managed to defend their title.

After an anxious 24-hour wait, FIFA ruled that Garrincha could play in the World Cup final. And Brazil could count themselves lucky, for Garrincha was one of six players dismissed during the tournament. The others all received a one-match ban, yet "The Little Bird" was let off with a reprimand. The Czechs, however, were ready for his presence, and kept him quiet throughout the game.

Despite the all night long celebrations in Santiago, following Chile's capture of the third place, nearly 70.000 people turned up for the big final.

And what a surprise they received when Masopust put Czechoslovakia into a 15 minute lead after racing on to a long pass from Scherer. But those who were familiar with their World Cup history knew that four of the six previous World Cup winners had fallen behind. And when Czechoslovakia were last in the final, against Italy in 1934, they opened the scoring, yet still lost. History was about to repeat itself.

It took Brazil only two minutes to wipe out Masopust's goal, when Amarildo beat the outstanding Schrojf with a shot from an acute angle. The normally reliable keeper was to blame. He was expecting a cross and was slow to react to Amarildo's shot. Czechoslovakia who only went to Chile after beating Scotland in a play-off in the qualifiers, were not overawed and were a good match for the favourites.

However, they allowed Brazil to take the lead for the first time in the 68th minute, when Zito started and finished a move, heading home an Amarildo centre.

And 13 minutes from time the Czechs were completely demoralized when their normally dependable goalkeeper fumbled a lob into the penalty area from Djalma Santos. Vava was on the spot to put the ball into the net.

Brazil ran out winners and Mauro went up to collect the Jules Rimet Trophy as Brazil joined Uruguay and Italy as two-times winners.
