The thing is, set-pieces, corners, crosses and long balls is England's traditional game and its what is specialized in. England can't play technical, the passing game or all out attack like a Spain or Brazil. Who is going to take Beckhams role? they need a dead ball specialist in this style of football. When he played every set piece and cross was a threat, the team will miss him more than people initially think, it will show when England play the top teams.

Especially when they play a tight game and only a set piece could win it , the game against greece in 01 comes to my head

LA Galaxy will miss him. England doesn't need a mascot.

i agree with Karayilan, cant understand this negativity towards Beckham to be honest, its always been there in the media, even when he got sent off in 98, any other nation would criticize Simone for taking a dive, but here they send Beckham death threats lol

people are deluded if they think players such as Lennon, Bentley, SWP are even close to Beckham

Becks is more appreciated and respected by those involved and who watch alot of non-English football, in England Becks does what most teams do but just executes it the best. Also teams practice in training for hours how to defend and deal with this type of play, its what they are used to. However, if you watch alot of football in Spain, Holland, Latin America or the Far East you will understand what a weapon a player like Beckham is.

Look at the Argentinian league, Veron and Riquelme are similar in that they are great passers of the ball and set-piece specialists, they rip their league apart with this roll because the defenses find it very hard to deal with this kind of play.

When England used to get a set-piece if you were supporting the other side you started sh*ttin it knowing Beckham was going to whip one in that was the most dangerous side to England's game.

Beckham was never that dominant. At Manu he operated from the right side of the field, which is a huge difference, for a distributing type of player, than from the central axis. Beckham never really developed a pass with the outside of his foot, which is what gives the true ball distributors their surprise element; they can go both ways with the ball. Beckham, on the other hand, always whips it in with the inside of his foot. This is what made his role at the Galaxy almost laughable to me. He took every set piece, but there was no surprise; and very little danger.

Beckham has a good cross. But that's it. He's not a 'field general'.

Imagine the ball straight in front of you, at your feet. You're right-footed. You can kick it with the inside of your right foot, and it will curve to your left. Or you can kick it with the outside of your right foot. And it will curve to your right.

Beckham, who grew up in England, where they don't really develop the distributing type of player, played from the right side of the field. So there never was a point to develop the kick with the outside of his foot. (it would have gone off the field. lol). In my opinion this type of player would almost certainly have developed differently in other European or South American leagues. The true maestros have a pinpoint precision pass with the outside of their foot.

For the basic technique here are some examples between the 1:00 and 1:15 minute mark.

yeah man.. right now England has no magic.. none at all.. They will beat the teams they are supposed to slam.. struggle against decent ones.. and loose to any good team they come up against in this WC...

I know i already liked USA +1 in the opener against England... But i got to Imagine Kara and I love it a lot more now...
