although it was a qualifying match for the uefa cl season , both teams didn't have a real chance to advance to the champions league .

I wish they ban NBA teams that do the same. Like the teams fielding bench players the last week and losing as 12 point favorites at home.

I saw this on the espn sports ticker. Some team from Macedonia. Who really cares it happened in 2004. Some people got a lifetime ban.

With impact of Russian mob, soccer is not reliable anymore. The game is too easy to fix. I've seen defenders take the day off, in a match that decided the championship for their opponent (who scored a necessary goal every time their competitor for the title, in a simultaneous game, scored). It's hard to see if a defender is missing an assignment on purpose, and therefore easy to pull off.

But not all players are good actors. I watched parts of a Mexican game last week, and I knew with certainty that the game was fixed. The goalie, dribbling with the ball, lost it to the opposing striker. The striker didn't quite make the right move past the goalie and decided to flop; without the goalie touching him. And the referee gave a penalty. It was hilarious. All three parties knew what to do.

This made the score 2-1. In the 2H I watched the same goalie closely and expected him to miss a corner. He came out to punch the ball away, but his effort was poorly timed. Goal. 2-2 final score.

Basketball is easier to fix. All you have to do is play your game for 39 min and 50 seconds and on the last play give up a meaningless layup to cover a +20 spread by one point. Noone will accuse you of fixing a game you won by 19 ponts by playing hard for 99% of the game.

Not as easy as it looks, because the game would have to be right on the 20 pt bubble at the end. That could take quite a bit of 'preparation'. In soccer the effect of one score is more decisive, in general. I have seen games where a team lets in two free goals. About the equivalent of 70 pts in basketball.

This stuff can happen, especially in the lesser known leagues with teams that have financial problems. However, if you know these leagues well and have contacts in the area you will know things are up before the game.

You have to be alert, picking games just on stats doesnt work in football, you must watch the games, know the history and the team pollitics. For example, in some leagues there are "brother" teams, they have old connections, friendly supporter groups or their bosses own stakes in each others clubs, when one team is in a bad situation they are likely to loose or draw games to help them out if their situation is safe.
