Best production on a rock song ever
Unfortunately, the poor sound quality on YouTube kind of ruins it. But ah well. Download the MP3 or get the CD!

Starting at 0:11, there is not a single tweak the producer could have given any of the instruments to make it sound any more perfect. Fukkin great job. Good song, too, and very good band.

well, if you think "best production on a rock song ever" legitimately applies to this song, then i guess i can't talk you off the ledge. i listened to alice in chains jar of flies 3 times tonight, and i think that album's production is leaps and bounds ahead of this porcupine tree song. i'll just go with rotten apple if you want to compare songs. perfect mix, perfect sounds from each instrument and the vocals...and that's just what i listened to tonight. maybe it's not comparable because it's not the same style, but your thread title isn't very exact.

i'm right now listening to deep purple's machine head and i would argue this production is 1000 times better than the song you posted.

Dude, here's the thing: Are you comparing songs you're listening to on your home system with no "middle man" to a song from a YouTube file???? OBVIOUSLY anything you play is gonna sound better!!!

I debated whether there was really any point to posting that since the crispness of the production is completely lost, but I figured well, I think it at least sounds good if you're only comparing it to other things you listen to directly from YouTube...

So I'd at least ask you to compare apples to apples by listening to the same format and source for my song as your other songs and then answer. But if you're not into the song or the production, that's fine. But it's not like I'm some kid whipping off a thread. I'm a total music-head and have been since I was about 10 and own a gazillion things in just about every genre (including both things you mentioned).... And I posted that because as I was going running and happened to be listening to the Porcupine Tree CD, I was like Holy Shit, this song sounds so perfect when those drums kick in. Obviously you can never pick just one best produced song, it's a ridiculous task, so yeah, I was just saying that for impact. It's more like there are just a ton of songs that are all "as well produced as possible"...

Now for consistency of sound mix/sound quality, that would get slightly easier, though still impossible, but you could use a band's whole catalog. Obviously you'd have to consider Trent Reznor's NIN stuff, in my opinion... obviously Pink Floyd... There's a band I love called Tortoise whose stuff always sounds perfect... I could go on and on.

Thanks for checking the thread at least. By the way, I don't LOVE Porcupine Tree, they're a little boring for a "progressive rock band," and I'd select some other prog-rock bands, both new and old, over them... but Steven Wilson definitely has his moments, so I can see why some people worship him. Later.

I really dont like the song at all but the sound is excellent if you could hear the cd on a cool system. Would be great to hear it like it was meant to be heard and on a great stereo. Thats why downloading torrents or listening to music on youtube is such a drag , music is meant to be heard in great quality through a good system. Can you imagine something like "whos next" recorded on alot of the modern equipment these studios have.
