#7Do you have any pets? Sometimes it helps to have a little companion like a dog or cat.
Your doctor can prescribe you a pet. It's a service animal and apartments cannot charge you pet deposits, fees or pet rent.
I know a few people who have pets for depression and they are very happy with their little buddies.Comment -

#11Thanks for the support everyone. I've been out of work for a long time and I think that was the biggest trigger. I'm taking my medication and going to therapy but I just need some good news. Lots of bad choices and self destructive behavior just building up and taking its toll right now.Comment -

Keep active as much as you can, sitting around thinking to much is a no-no.Join a gym, when you start feeling the walls closing in,get up and take a nice long walk,or bike ride.

#17First and most important is that you were hospitalized ,was that to do with the suicide attempt? The right thing to do is get professional help where you live, then you can talk it out which it seems like thats what your doing. As far as being depressed do you know what is depressing you . The major triggers are relationships, money, or guilt. You claim an attempt seeing that your still here more than likely it was a cry -out for help. I would say it did you well you are know on meds and group consulling. This tells me it can't be of an extremely private matter. Sometimes you need another medication to go with what your using to boosts its effects. If you need more help than that I will find out how to get the p.m. to work and I can assist you further just let me know. I had the world by the balls and needed help for 14 years. I am better , but still fall down sometimes.Comment -

things get better dude. hang in there. like a guy a few posts above said..the worst thing you can do is be inside your own head...no sitting around the house alone and just thinking. thats #1. try to always have some one by your side just to keep you company or just keep yourself active...go for a nice long walk..try to do old activities you used to love as a kid....anything but sitting alone and thinking.Comment -

#20I just had some serious health issues stemming from imbalanced hormones, that triggered a huge depression.
It was absolutely horrible. Now, I know what the commercials talk about, when you're so down, you can't even get out of bed. It hurts to move because every thought in your mind is awful. I can't explain it. I hope no one has to go through it. It's like knowing you have this fatal disease that is ripping your guts inside and you wonder why you're still struggling to stay alive. But no one believes you because it's all internal. At least fatal illnesses are physical, so people will be compassionate. Depression is invisible, so no one believes you till you blow your brains out.
That, and I've been unemployed for a long time too. But I make a meager living from gambling and my boyfriend takes care of the rest. I know it wasn't my living conditions that triggered it because I've been living like this for over a year and I've been very happy.
Luckily, my hormones balanced out, I don't know if it was because I forced myself to keep living, ie, go shopping, exercise, gamble, movies, etc... or if my hormones just balanced out and my illness went away.
I hope you find your way out of your depression. I know it's different for everyone. But it's a struggle. Keep fighting!Comment -

#22There are some great responses in here. I have been through it alot after losing my mother, if you ever lose someone in your life that you love like a parent, it can be a long term struggle. Such a sense of loss at times.
Working out and being in shape, staying focused on goals, staying busy and positive are the only ways I deal with it. The seasonal depression sickler mentioned is another big problem. Its like that Van Morrison line "Gotta get through January, Gotta get through February". I just love alot of light and winter always depresses me, I put in alot more windows in my place for that very purpose.
Who knows, I always hope I meet someone who makes you forget that loss or whatever you are depressed about. Being in love is a miracle worker.
Staying busy and starting each day with a strong purpose is the key. Good luck Tchocky.Comment -

I lost my mother last May, there was so much going on for several months after that I didn't have time to get depressed.
Exercise is the key for me. Lack of it sours the mood. Living in a cold climate and being an outdoors person doesn't help. Eying spending winters in a warmer climate.

#27Good stuff sickler. Are you in Canada? I bet that is tough. I know what you mean, you are so busy during the whole time during and right after a funeral but it catches up with you. Sunshine and having a relationship seems to be the best way to deal with it, the sunshine part is easy but the relationship is much harder to find. I agree, exercise and staying in shape is essential.
Wasn't so much the funeral with me. Big problems with the will. Threats back and forth, lawyers involved. The trustee threatening me to my face. A very complicated will, favourable to me. When the rock of the family is no longer around all loyalty may disappear. Trust no-one.Comment -

#28Thats amazing sickler, that was the exact wording I used during the funeral about losing the rock or center of a family. Its unreal how losing one person can change the whole dynamics of a family. It is never the same again with certain relationships.Comment -

I experienced how greed can tear a family apart. Money is the root of all evil. The person I've had the most problems with is the executor/trustee, who happened to be with my mother when the will was made. Even had I known the contents of the will (which I didn't), never in a million years would I have expected this outcome. Within a week after my mother's death, while I'm still devastated and trying to deal with it, I'm being threatened about the will, the executor saying there's a problem and wants me to go see the estate lawyer, who was acting as the executor/trustee's lawyer, not the lawyer for all beneficiaries. Unreal. There was nobody on this earth I trusted more than this executor/trustee. Disappointed in human natureComment -
