Very tragic. I ride myself and watching this gives me second thoughts about jumping on my bike. Ride safe boys.

Horrific accident, I'll never ride a motorbike, just so vulnerable on those things.

Motorsport was mourning its second death in the space of a week after Italian Marco Simoncelli was killed in a crash at the Malaysian Moto GP.

That's devastating to watch. His face sliding across the pavement like that and Stoner saying how he felt sick watching the footage even before it was announced Marco had died.

RIP Marco. I've had some bets on you this year and you made the sport fun to watch. Too young.

Italy must be gutted. You can tell Valentino knew too. He never looked back until he was at the end of the straight. Nothing he could do really.

I reckon Rossi's going to be pretty messed up. I'm not sure how true it is but they were saying on the broadcast here that they're quite good friends. Even though it was obviously an accident, you'd think that would play with your mind bigtime.

I was quite surprised in that DM article you linked that the last person to die in MotoGP was back in 2003. I only got into it when I moved down here as it's pretty popular and all the races are shown on TV, but I would've thought it would be more recent than that. I'm actually feeling a bit nauseous thinking about this... I really did like him because he seemed so quirky and funny. I'd put money on him just for the sake of it because I liked him and his personality. So sad.

Yeah I think this might be the last time I watch this sport. Even though this was just a freak accident, it's upset me more than I expected. Never should've went to YouTube to look at replays.

This is the official press conference.

Yeah it's pretty major. The circuit goes all throughout Asia, Europe and Australia. These guys were like an hour away from me last wknd racing at Phillip Island.

But I never got into it until I moved down here. All the races are televised live so I started to follow it then. Not surprising you've never heard of it... not sure I really did before leaving N America.

                                This is sad.

I've been a Moto GP/AMA Superbike fan for awhile now. But the races are on at such weird times that I never get to see them live, it's always 2 day delay or some shit. In a country full of Nascar freaks and racing fans in general I've never understood why Moto racing wasn't more popular.

MotoGP is actually very popular in the US, even more so since the top US riders graduating from the AMA (like Nicky Hayden and Ben Spies) started to 'come over'. There are two races a year in the States and that will incease to 3 in 2013 when the new track in Austin, TX (that will host F1 from 2012) is added to the calendar.

^ "Very popular" is a bit of a stretch.

                                    "Somewhat popular" maybe.

"Not popular at all but there is a die hard fan base" is more like it.

Sports like these have no stigma attached to them - 2 deaths in space of 10 days in racing sports yet Mixed Martial Arts is still banned in some places...it's amazing.

                                          Fair enough.

I am a die hard motorsports fan myself so would acknowledge that I am a bit blinkered. Travelled from the UK to Laguna Seca last year and intend going to the first F1 race in Austin next year.

Two deaths in major series within one week is hard to swallow, brings back memories of 1994.
