Did you gain/lose money on your 401K last quarter?
I gained $3500. And that does not include my contributions.

Yeah, it was brutal back then. Making it all back, and then, some now though.

How do you diversify your investments? Do you split between risky and safe? Have you come up with a personalized plan?
I wish the rules allowed you take the money and just "play" the market however you want. The problem is they keep the money out of your hands under the control of the so called experts.
I'm at an amount where I really want to start being aggressive. Any suggestions?

Some 401k plans let customers customize as much as they want with a straight brokerage account. I have one called a Schwab PCRA.
Last quarter was up about 10%. I don't consider it a win however as most of the recovery was money lost in 2008.

I'm glad I don't have a 401k. I have a pension plan
4.5% per paycheck pretax goes into it. My employer put in 6.2% of what my check is pretax. So it's over 100% match.
Don't got to worry about ups and downs I know I'm safe when I retire in 40 fukin years

I am down a ton and I don't even look at my statements anymore, very depressing. I am about to hit it big, IPO that is going to hit it big. A bay area deal....

my simple ira is all in 10-year cds, so i make interest every month no matter what happens.
i've been making 4-6%/year for 15 years now (plus the tax savings), much better than most have done over the last 10 years without having to worry about it.
no matter what you put it in, you should ALWAYS put as much as possible in a 401(k), ira, etc.
in a high-tax state like wisconsin if you have a mediocre income you're ahead 25% federal + 8% state tax right off the bat. and if you have an employer match, then you could be up 100%+...

Your pensions only as safe as your employers ability to pay out WHEN YOU get there, unless its backed by an annuity or insurance policy of some sort.
Every year 100's of workers in the united states are screwed because pension costs arent sufficiently covered by employers
I wish I had a pension, trying to build a 401 K sucks big time, just saying nothings guaranteed

I hadn't looked in a while. I just looked up my year to date rate of return. It is pretty good.
Personal Rate of Return from 01/01/2011 to 04/29/2011 is 10.5%*

Gained some, felt good. Was finally eligible at my new job to contribute, so I'm maxing it out and then some. Then again, my job is to read stock tips all day, so I SHOULD be making money.

Mine has been doing very well for the past 18 months. But this month I'm rotating out of stocks because I'm afraid of another big correction when the Fed quits propping it up.

I gained with some gold and energy stocks. I also have a little in a 3x SP500 ETF.
