A Long Island mother who used an outdoor BBQ grill to heat her home has been charged with reckless endangerment after officials say she exposed her family to carbon monoxide poisoning.

According to Suffolk County Police, Marie Claudia-Blaise, 43, wheeled in the charcoal grill into the family's Brentwood home after she ran out of heating oil.

Police were called to the home at around 4 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of a woman "passing out."

A preliminary investigation determined that the residents of the home were suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning.

As officers searched the home, they discovered Blaise and her 13-year-old son Claudys unconscious and her semi-unconscious 10-year-old daughter Francysca.

Cops say the woman's husband, Yves Blaise, 48, and her eldest daughter Frandia, 16, were able to leave the home on their own.

The family was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where they were treated and later released. Marie Claudia-Blaise, however, was taken to Nassau University Medical in East Meadow where she is undergoing hyperbaric treatment. She was listed in serious condition Wednesday afternoon.

They're charging her with a crime? It's not like she was trying to kill everybody - she was foolishly trying to keep them all warm. In her mind, she was doing a good thing. Granted, she was unaware of the affects that carbon monoxide have on the body, or that charcoal emits carbon monoxide when it burns, but is the lack of an education any reason to charge her with a crime? It was an accident, sheesh. A very stupid one, yes, but still an accident.

I'm pretty sure if it wasn't done on purpose she could get out by claiming it was ignorance or something of that nature. If there was no intent to cause harm I don't think they can do anything to her. She was being stupid, but you make some good points.

I agree. I'm not sure what charging her with a crime achieves. She was trying to keep her family warm, albeit in not the brightest fashion, but still... it's not like she was hoping to gas everyone.

Very unfortunate incident though. Whether she was too financially strapped to afford the oil or simply ran out, they're all just lucky that this didn't end tragically.

I think by charging her, she more than likely won't do any time, but you're forcing other services like Child Services to be more involved in her kid's well being.
