#2I assume that you're talking about the machu picchu ruins, but those are in peru, not mexico. Check out the mayan ruins at Chichen Itza in mexico.Comment -

Yes, definitely a little too far for youYou have 4 major Mayan riun sites south of Cancun in Riviera Maya. I would recommend Chichen Itza, but take a guided tour right from your hotel, wouldnt recommend doing the tour and driving on your own.

#8I was just in Playa Del Carmen last summer...it was awesome and it's plenty safe. I didn't make it up to Cancun, but with it's where all the action is from what I heard...if your younger, early-mid 20's. All the drama is by the border towns which is a ways off from the Yucatan. Head south to see the ruins or hit up a place called Xel Ha...best buffet I've ever had...seriously! Good snorkling too. There's a place in Carmen called CoCo Bongos that goes off as well as Sr. Frogs. I would also try and get on a ferry and check out Cozumel...that place is awesome, but annoying with all the people trying to sell you shit. No matter what, it's safe and you'll have fun no matter what you do compared to being at home, which has been 20 degrees and snow mostly. Have fun!!Comment -

#10never been to cancun, but i went to alcapulco a few years ago for a week. It was pretty insane (it was spring break) but lets just say there are some things about mexico you won't miss, such as the constant street beggars that hit you up constantly cause your clearly not destitute and the water/food that will make your insides feel like they are rotting away.
I swear, my poops weren't back to normal for at least month after leaving mexicoComment -

#12Its like that on a regular basis. One of my professors actually lives there and commutes across the border everyday to teach at like 3 of the universities here in San Diego. I couldn't deal with that shit

#16Be prepared to stop at several gift shops on the way, if you are in the market for a penis sculpture you're all set. Having said that, the tour was fascinating. Sad that you can't climb the pyramid anymore, but its still well worth it IMO.Comment -

#21I see a lot of people are nothing but media sheep in here. I go to Mexico a lot, and you would think heads are rolling around all the towns with the way Yahoo and conservative news outlets talk about the country.
As many times as i've been, I've never actually gone to Cancun. I have to go sometime soon though, before I become an old man, then it just won't be the same.Comment -

Then you just flash your passport and walk in and go into the building. It's seldom more than a 20 minute wait once you get into the building.Comment -

#27Alright fellas, just got back from an amazing trip, thank you all for the advice!!!...there was literally no signs of trouble any where and I hit some rough spots on the way to and from Chicken-itza. In talking with the local (I speak a modes amount of spanish- they said really unless you get into the deeper parts of cancun you wont hit any trouble- Im talking thatched roofs and being out there at night in an ally. Then you might get ****** with...
Chichen-itza was cool except for the beggars/barterers. (the actual city is amazing and if you are in the Cancun or playa del carmen area you need to check that place out).
Tulum a city of ruins that used to home 15k mayans was my favorite of the ruins though, very clean, free guided tours, you can go out on their beach and you dont have little buggers begging. wild cool exotic animals everywhere!!!
Playa del carmen was very nice I spent two days there and it reminds me of Maui and the downtown area of Lahina. Mostly shopping there. My chick loved it though...
I stayed at Gran malia which was a nice hotel but we had a few problems with the room, dont get me wrong the rooms were beautiful, you could tell there was just some shady craftsmanship involved...
A little word of waring, dont get the "all inclusive" deal these guys are giving out down there...109$ a day for free drinks, food, etc. etc. What they dont tell you is there is a 4 day wait to get into any restaurant offered. (unless you like to tip a lot...) Everything, I mean everything is a hustle down there, if they can make money off of something they sure as hell are going to try. I needed internet for business and it was $6 for 15mins on some dial up! WTF when I complained though they gave me 15 hours for free. Must be an on-going problem...
So to review-
Tulum, Chichen-itz, Xa-hi all must hit ruins very cool. Playa del carmen, cleaner, safer, more up-scale shopping than cancun but smaller. And night life not as crackin as Cancun...
Clubs to hit in cancun- Coco bongo was cool because its not often I hit clubs where its a dance party and performance at the same time. Hacenda Salsal was the truth too.
Best food- Ruth Chris wow they were good down there. Live Jazz, and on point with everything as usual!!!Comment -

#29Head to the Beaches just south of Tulum.......like 100 yards south of Tulum. No large hotels, topeless euro's and lots of space for yourself. You'll need to rent a car, but that is no big deal. I drove all over the Mexican Riviera and never had any problems. There are police all over the place w/ machine guns, but they just stand around drinking soda pop.Comment -
