    are 4G phones really 4G?
I am trying to get a an Android smartphone for betting on the go amongst other things. The 3G phones cost about a penny and up (HTC Droid Incredible, Motorola Droid X, etc). The upcoming top five 4G Android phones:

    Motorola Bionic

    Motorola Atrix

    Samsung Infuse

    HTC Thunderbolt

    LG Revolution

Should I stick with the 3G phones since they are cheaper plus "4G" is really just hype and marketing as we speak, since I read that 4G speeds does not even exist yet?

If you have experience with the HTC Droid Incredible or the Motorola Droid X, please let me know which is best. Seems like the Droid X is stronger in a lot of department plus it can be used as my internet wifi hotspot for a fee (this means I can use my laptop and other things with wifi to connect to the internet without having a separate subscription account with another company).

I live in LA and 4g is everywhere... The speeds are ******* fast. Check if your city offers 4g before buying the phone..

Tmobiles 4g and verizon isn't anywhere near the coverage sprint has. It's all hype.

all depends on where you live. you have to have 4G in your area to start with.

are you saying T Mobile and Verizon sucks with their 4G systems? I thought Sprint is not too good either as a phone company? I thought that Verizon's Android phones we're better than Sprint's Android phones? I can't use just any Android phone with any phone service company can I? I'd use the Droid X with T Mobile, but Droid X is Verizon exclusive? Right?

I'm saying their basically airing commercials all day like they have nationwide 4g...blah blah blah. None of them do including sprint...but tmobiles 4g is far behind verizon and sprint.

I'm not talking about the phones...the phones you listed are all good especially the thunderbolt.

The droid x is good...but not worth buying at the moment with the thunderbolt coming out..

Plus it only has 3G hotspot..

Chicago....I didn't get it at my house when I got the phone in July, and haven't checked since.

But I do get it at the bar less than a mile away, and I get it on my whole drive to work soon as I get out of my subdivision. I pretty much get it anywhere besides my house, which isn't a big deal because I have laptops.

The entire city of las Vegas has 4g...only problem is when you get inside a casino...the signal switches to 3G.

                    is 3G enough?

Is 3G as fast as DSL? What's the Mbps for it? 1.5 or higher? I will go with a 3G phone if it's sufficient enough I guess. The 3G phones are either cheaper or free compared to the newer 4G phones.

you haven't even tried the thunderbolt yet so how can you say it's better than the Droid X? I was looking to get the Droid X. I'm just waiting for reviews of the new 4G phones so I can decide.

I think out of the 5 new 4G phones I listed, the Motorola Atrix is the better of the rest, from reading its specs and features, plus it functions as the "brain" of a laptop (you connect the phone to some kind of laptop base and it works as a laptop). Something like that...

Each generation of phones is upgraded for speed and other stuff based on the demand for faster phones. Why would you think it's not true? People are not stupid enough to buy a 4g phone that isn't significantly different from the previous generation.

i made the mistake of buying the HTC evo 4G. The phone is ridiculous, but I am not in a 4G area, so i have to leave the 4G off. The 3G is FAST, but my 4G does me no good, and teh sprint people obviously didnt warn me of this ahead of time.

Atrix is garbage. Getting bad reviews left n right.. its slow compared to most androids and re laptop is worst than a netbook but it cost 600$ lol

Everyone has a laptop and all phones now can be wireless internet for them free after rooting so the atrix is just overpriced flare....

Imo for next two years 90% of us won't have 4g...and right now android has perfected phones with droidx and the like. So I would get one of those and in two years when contract is up I think by then the most amazing phones we have ever seen will b on market...faster than most computers currenty is my guess.

Here in Austin and all the way to San Antonio, the 4G is great and worth the extra $100 the EVO cost me.

I was going to get it but will consider the Droid X instead. The Droid Incredible has weak battery I heard, but pretty much just about similar to the Droid X (which has better battery life, features, etc.)

i thought all 3G is 3G, regardless of phone types? Why are you saying the Thunderbolt is faster "even" on 3G? All I know is that the Thunderbolt has the best name of the new Android phones, I haven't cross-compared its specs and features yet (I like quality all-in-ones like with camera, video, voice, GPS, weather, etc.)

yeah it only got 9/10 on engadget and 9.5/10 on phone arena, Higher than ANY android phone.

4G is really 3G+, no such thing as real 4G in North America.

LTE Verizon is the fastest, closest to 4G.

Rogers in Canada will beat it soon.

None of the phone will live up to their potential as long as the carriers keep capping data( except sprint)
T mobile unlimited is really 5gb. And verizon and att is 2gb...who cares about 4g when u get capped and then your phone is running like dial-up

they are 4g, but require a 4g network to get those kind of speeds, speed will increase over the next ~3 years
