Why would China back down on tariffs as it only hurts the US? Last time Trump put tariffs on China he had to bail out the farmers with subsidies as they couldn't sell their soybeans and pork to China.

Don't believe anything. When a clown moves into the palace it becomes a circus. They say Trump is "negotiating" a deal but he needs to rake 5 trillion from the people's 401k to do it. They said today Trump broke another record. He is the fastest president to take a US economy into recession. He dropped the stock market by 25% in just 3 days. What a guy! The gift that keeps on giving!

And the market is simply predicting the odds of future fall in economic activity due to the current policies. It will be followed by recession or depression. Unless Trump decided to reverse course.
