Top 5: Coolest athletes who are now Deceased
No particular reason I'm posting this. Just something that crossed my mind. An appreciation of greats who are no longer with us:

    1) Baseball - Ted Williams
...What a life this guy lived. I'll paraphrase: "When I walk down the street, I want people to say 'There goes the greatest hitter who ever lived.'" When you adjust for the era, I think that's true. A ridiculous On-Base %, so potent. Career totals diminished by his war service. And a great fly-fisherman, to boot.

    2) Basketball - Wilt Chamberlain
...The Stilt. Athletic ability that went off the charts. Really could have succeeded in most any athletic arena he chose to pursue. Would he have been the best volleyball player ever, if he had focused on that? Add in the sexual escapades. Supposedly viewed conquests as a notch on the belt and not an interaction with a female.

    3) Football - Paul Hornung
...Lived the life. Heisman winner, all-pro, got the girls. As a pro with the Packers, just awesome. Great blocker, team player and a true Lombardi guy. Won the early titles, missed 1963 because of suspension. Came back for Chapter 2, five TDs in Baltimore. "A green-shirted ghost arose at fog-shrouded Memorial Stadium." Won the title vs Cleveland. And the 1963 Bear title is an asterisk.*

*Didn't play vs Packer A-team. No Hornung.

    4) Rock Climbing - Wolfgang Gullich
...Trend-setter, broke thru limits that no one else could. Kept moving the bar. His workouts were legendary. The fitness and balance was truly awesome. Died prematurely (at age 31), not by falling but via car accident on the autobahn.

    5) Hockey - Gordie Howe
...All-time great. Made time for the young fans, something that Jeremy Roenick remembered. Prolific player, and a tough guy. Something special when they create the moniker of The Gordie Howe Hat Trick. A goal, an assist, and a fight.

Slayer, that's a good one. Honestly, Pele (soccer) looks like an omission from my list.

Pele is up there for sure. There are many other soccer players that I admire. But Pele has to be at the top when it comes to world-class Skill and Grace.

*Matuszak and Alzado were truly part of the Raider spirit. One saying comes to mind: "Better to burn out than fade away."

Matuszak has some classic Raider interviews. Was part of the championship teams in 1976 and 1980.

I wrote about Alzado in this thread. Go to post 139:

As a kid, I always loved playing defense, specifically defensive end. Loved ‘Mean’ Joe Greene & the ‘Steel Curtain’ and the ‘Commitment To Excellence’. Probably $#!T my pants when the Raiders moved to L.A. and my dad took me to see them at The Coliseum. Maybe those memories cloud my judgement, but those characters were larger than life to my young, pre-teen brain. Wouldn’t give up that time for anything…..

*That's good stuff. A lot of Raider fans around here.

The Raider players from that era truly were larger than life. Matuszak/Alzado were two of the bigger reclamation projects.

The Raider demolition during the 1983 Playoffs was something to behold:

Malted, I'll give you a little Raider trivia question:

*Name the THREE Raiders who played on the THREE Super Bowl championship teams (in 1976/1980/1983).

*One asterisk: A fourth Raider won titles as a PLAYER in 1976/1980 and then was on the COACHING staff in 1983.

Not cheating (you’ll just have to trust me) - but 1 has to be Art Shell.

Usually a kicker or holder or something obscure, so I’m thinking Chris Bahr.

I can’t think of a third, and as soon as you say it, I’ll go ‘OH YEAH! DUH!’

                    Malted, those are good tries:

*SHELL is the extra guy I referenced. He won as a player in 1976 & 1980. Retired after 1982, went straight into coaching as the Raider Off Line Coach. So, he got a ring as Coach in 1983.

*Chris Bahr is a great guess. Was a rookie on the Bengals in 1976. Errol Mann was the Raider kicker in 1976. Chris joined the Raiders in 1980 and won the title in 1980 & 1983.

So, three other guys who won in 1976, 1980, & 1983.*

*Hint: all three are NFL Hall of Famers.

                                  Malted:

*I have one more amazing Raider stat for you.

I truly believe that in 1980 Lester Hayes had the best single-season Cornerback performance in the history of the league. I had to double-check my facts on this one.

In 1980 Hayes intercepted TWENTY-TWO passes, if you count the Regular Season and Playoffs:
                                  *13 Regular Season
                                  *5 more in the playoffs
*plus 4 more that were scrubbed out by penalty.

Twenty-two! That's how awesome he was in 1980. So, 13 in the Regular Season, enough to earn The Judge NFL Defensive Player of the Year. 2 vs Hou, 2 vs Cle, and 1 vs the Chargers...so 5 more in the playoffs. And four more that were nullified by penalty.

                                    *More Matuszak footage for you.

Yes, he was a fantastic talent. He lived the life, but I think part of that was building up his image.

Good player, contributed to the titles in 1976 and 1980. The range was impressive. I know for a fact that Jaworski struggled throwing around/over Matuszak and Hendricks in the Super Bowl. The arms went on forever. No angles, and Rod Martin snared the three interceptions.

More Raider lore. Lester Hayes tribute:

See the 1980 season I reference (above). I think Lester made one tactical error.

Raider WR Fred Biletnikof made use of Stickum on his hands. Biletnikof could seemingly catch everything. Lester picked up on this and also used the Stickum.

After catching everything in 1980, a reporter asked Lester about the use of Stickum. Hayes said "Before Stickum, I couldn't catch a cold in Antarctica."

After 1980 the NFL banned Stickum.

John Matuzak & Lyle Alzado were a big part of my childhood as a Raiders fan…..
                                        Several parallels between Matuszak/Alzado:

                                        1) Castoffs from other teams.
                                        2) Both looked the part. With the beards, that's what a Defensive Lineman is supposed to look like.
                                        3) Played up "the animal" look.
                                        4) Despite this, both had more brains than they let on.
                                        5) They revealed this later in interviews. Matuszak on the David Letterman Show, Alzado with Roy Firestone before he passed away.
                                        6) The "animal" persona led to acting roles after their playing days.
                                        7) Both died prematurely. Matuszak didn't make it to 40, Alzado died at age 43.

Alzado interview where he talks about Matuszak being his friend. Both Alzado and Matuszak did extensive charity work at Children's Hospitals:

I remember a humble Gayle Sayers scoring 6 touchdowns in a game. He was the consummate runner and return artist.
