I had seen bits and pieces of it on TV, but never the whole thing. I thought the first one was way better. Too slow moving, the “bad guys” were pussies IMO, not enough action. It was good but not even top 5 of mob movies, maybe top ten.

Some people tolerate GF3. I draw the line on GF2 vs GF3. GF3 doesn't belong in the same lineage as the first two.
I mentioned the Roger Ebert criticism re: plot flaws in GF2. Most of what he's talking about ties to Fredo being an idiot. In that regard, I say that GF2 works. Why is there a breakdown in the Corleone hierarchy? The main reason is that Fredo feels slighted as the older brother...and John Cazale's method acting should be plauded.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -
I actually saw the third one, but it was a while ago. I thought it was OK but obviously way worse than the first. The incest thing was ridiculous, don't know why they had that plot line in 3. That kind of killed the movie.
I would have cut the flashbacks if I had to redo 2, maybe 20-30 minutes at most, and add action in there. Also, I would give us the sense the villains were more ruthless and not just old men with a foot in the grave.Comment -

You're right. That's not a very strong opinion.
It's art. So everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I'll list some counter-points on why that's questionable (at best):
1) The true mafioso members watched "The Godfather" and came out feeling like they had watched a documentary of their lives. The authenticity was very good. The situations the characters were put into came across as very real.
2) The acting was quite good. Go across the board. The strengths/weaknesses of the characters come across in the film. They aren't stock characters. They have good/bad elements.
3) The script is done with very little (if any) vulgarity. The story is carried by quality acting.
There's a lot to digest. I'll start with two un-forgettable things (to me):
a) The fire hydrant scene where Sonny attacks Carlo. It looks very life-like b/c it was. Caan (Sonny) hated Rossi (Carlo) b/c of an incident they had in a club. Watch how it looks like Carlo is catching a good beating. It was real, Caan broke two of Rossi's ribs.
b) Watch the John Cazale scenes as Fredo. It's such a tough character to depict. Who wants to be the weak link in a powerful family? "I'm your older brother, Mike." It's an impossible character to portray correctly...and Cazale died not too long after that.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -
Top 3 movie all time for me. Frank Pentangeli, Michael V. Gazzo, should've won the best supporting actor award for life. If its not in someone's top 10 even, then it 100% should be considered the top sequel of all time. I've never seen a better follow-up. In fact, I'd have to say it was better than GF1. Its close, but better. I think people overlook the plots and all the movements/scenes including Cuba, etc. The Fredo betrayal. Ahhhhhhhh everything. Sure, why not!

There really is a lot to digest in GF2. So much of it is tied to the interaction btw Mike and Fredo.

Re-watched "The French Connection" this weekend.
The acting is just so good. I have to ask the question:
*Do you see many modern movies where the ACTING makes the movie?
I watched a series of interviews done with Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider. Hackman was pretty honest about him being un-convincing in some of the early takes of the aggressive cop scenes. Gene actually said he told the director that he wasn't sure he could do it.
Gene and Roy said it took them a while to get the roles down. They eventually felt natural so that they could be "in character."
Love Gene and Roy as actors. They really do good work. And it comes across on the scene.
One scene I forgot about. Such a great scene. It's the scene where the young chemist is testing the heroin. He's testing the purity and labels each notch on the scale. Eventually he declares the shipment as 97% pure. He knows they hit the mother-load.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -
You know why I never saw 2? Because I wanted to watch 1 all the time if I wanted to see a Godfather movie. The weird thing was I saw 3 over a friends house without seeing 2. Anyways, I will watch 1 all the time from here on out. I'm surprised they get compared to each other. I think they got progressively worse. If they had a 4, I'm sure it would suck.Comment -

just saw this. i am in the boat where i liked 1 better than 2 also. i was not a huge fan of the back and forth between time periods either.
i also do not think 3 is that bad. i like sonny's son played by andy garcia. i DESPISE him sleeping with his cousin like it is no big deal. that part of the movie really was weird. like besides being michael's daughter it is your fcuking cousin!!!Comment -
I like the line near the beginning when Michael is yelling at Connie and he says, "Do you know your son Victor got picked up on a robbery charge you don't even know about?" Cracks me up every time.Comment -
She ruined the third movie for me. The incest was so sick and would have never happened in that time period. She was a terrible actress overacting everything. The best part is when she got shot at the end IMO. Andy Garcia was good. He was penetrating some hot blonde at the beginning and apparently dumped her for his uglier more annoying cousin. I didn't get that storyline at all. That should have never made it in the movie. Anyways, I would put movies like Carlitos Way, Bronx Tale, Casino, Good Fellas, Donnie Brasco ahead of Godfather 2. I have Scarface and Godfather 1 at the top of the Mob List.Comment
