#38[FGY]TPeti is another player to look out for that nobody picked in Section 1. I played him in 8 regular Hexversi games back in 2018. I went 6-2 against him but all the games were close. He had mmariomm beat in a game in an earlier Tournament but he made a blunder and lost. Most of his losses in these Hexversi Tourneys have been because of blunders or time-outs. I think he might be getting up there in age. But check out these big Reversi/Othello Tournament victories from the early 2000's. He could be a dark horse in this Tourney. I was tempted to pick him but he times out so often.

#39That is actually a really impressive run by [FGY]TPeti, no matter how many years ago it was! You can only compete against your current competition, and he was clearly ahead of the curve at that point! I had no idea he was that dominant back then. I guess we'll see if grandpa Reversi can still teach the new Hexversi kids a few tricksComment -

#41The 44th World Othello Championships have been going on over the last few days in Paris. There were 88 competitors from 25 different countries. At least a couple of players that played in our Hexversi Tournaments competed in it. Including David Hand(shimgar) and Guy Plowman, both representing Great Britain. David tied for 13th place overall and Guy tied for 29th. Great Britain placed 4th in the Team rankings. Japan placed 1st. There might have been some other players that played in the Hexversi Tournaments there as well but I'm not positive. I recognize some of the names from Facebook.
It looks like Mario wasn't there this year, but I know he's competed in several of them. The top USA player was Brian Rose. He tied for 13th as well. He wrote "A Minute to Learn... A lifetime to Master..." about Othello strategy. I read it back in 2006 in. That's pretty much where I learned to play. He was World Champion back in 2001.
Here's a link to the results:
The 2nd Round of the current Hexversi Tournament is wrapping up. Ivan swept me. So it looks like the Finals are going to be...
ethmah01
blankoblanco
Ivan Gutorov
This should be a great Final! ethmah has really improved since the first time I played him. He's a student of the game when it comes to Othello. I visit the Othello Academy Discord on occasion and he's fairly active there.
Just keep this in mind blanko.... you've beaten a guy(Plowman) in Hexversi that placed 29th in the World in Othello. That's pretty damn good!! And you nearly beat shimgar!! This guy is one of the most respected Othello players online. I think you've got a decent shot here! I'm looking forward to these matches. A 4th Round wouldn't surprise me.
I'll do the official points and everything when the Round is officially over.Last edited by JohnGalt2341; 11-01-22, 07:41 PM.Comment -

#42Thanks for the support John! I think I have my moments where I can spot really good tactics/sequences, but putting it all together for an entire game vs. high caliber players such as yourself is a huge challenge. The great players can punish you for any misstep you make
And you weren't kidding about ethmah. I didn't think too much of him because he didn't win a lot, but recently looked through his past games and discovered nearly all of his losses were time-outs. Most being in games where he had a guaranteed win. Now that he's actually trying he looks scaryComment -

#48Well it looks as if ethmah01 has timed-out his games. Normally you get up to 7 days to request to get your games reinstated, but it looks as if the Finals have already started so, I think it's too late for him now. Tough break for Jackpot as he would have predicted all 3 Section Winners correctly and would have moved up to first place in the standings.
This means Toptal has advanced to the Finals instead. So the Section Winners for Round 2 are as follows:
1. Toptal 5-1 (11-1)
2. blankoblanco 6-0 (12-0)
3. Ivan Gutorov 4-0 (10-0)
The prediction point standings are as follows.
1. blankoblanco 11
2. JohnGalt2341 10
3. Daniel Espinosa 9
3. jackpot269 9
5. las8 6
This Final Section is worth 3 points, so with the exception of Las8, everyone is still in this. Try to get your pick in by Sunday, November 6th at the very latest.
blankoblanco 0 0 0.00 Ivan Gutorov 0 0 0.00 Toptal 0 0 0.00

Might as well bet on myself!

#54Well, I won 1 of my games against Ivan! His only loss of the tournament. It was a pretty interesting and complex game imo. But, predictably, he won our other game
The other problem is he swept Toptal and 1 of my games against Toptal looks like I might be on the backfoot. I'll of course try my best to win it but a small part of me doesn't want it to drag into a tiebreaker round (I'm assuming that's how it works) because it will take so long before the next tournament! Either way this is my best performance in a tournament so far, pleased with thatComment -

If it does end up apparent that there's going to be a tie-breaker round in the finals, maybe you should just go ahead and start the next tournament without me?Last edited by blankoblanco; 11-24-22, 08:08 AM.Comment -

Boy, those games between you and Ivan were very complex! Congrats on getting the one win! And Congrats on sweeping Toptal! This is going to a 4th Round boys!
The new prediction point standings are as follows.
1. blankoblanco 14
2. JohnGalt2341 13
3. jackpot269 12
4. Daniel Espinosa 9
5. las8 6
This next Round is worth 4 points, but it basically comes down to who sweeps who.

#57I might play it out on the slower side just so I'm only making moves when my mind is clear, but should still be faster than Toptal. I tend to speed up later in the game (if it goes that far)
I know I'm still the underdog but sticking to my guns!

#60Ummm... guys.. I won the tournament???!!!
Purple game was a sure win for me, green game was still close, but I guess Ivan didn't want to fight for it just on the hopes of going to yet another tiebreaker round so he surrendered. Wow!Comment -

I paid you 3000 for Winning the Tournament and 1000 for Winning the Prediction Points. Both paid in post #60. I'm going to have to owe you the other 2000 for now. I have it, but just barely. Hopefully I can turn some of my Freeplay points into real points by the end of the next Tourney. I guess I should have been more conservative/careful with my points. I was expecting shimgar and mmariomm to be in this Tourney, not to mention some other Othello players. Either way, you won fair and square. I just want to save some of my Points for the end of the next Tourney, just in case. Hopefully I can Win some of these daily contests to build up my points a bit.
The next Open Fast Tourney starts on Tuesday, December 13th. I wasn't planning on organizing another Tournament so soon, but I think I am going to because if I don't, then the next Open Fast Tourney won't be until right after the Christmas Holiday Weekend. So... I would have to do the recruiting that weekend. So... that would be a real pain in the ass. And I don't think many people would sign up that weekend anyway.
So I think I'm going to organize the next Tournament for this one:
- Sign up for the December 2022 Open Fast #1 Tournament by Monday, December 12
I'll start a thread either tonight or tomorrow. Congrats on winning the Tournament!! It's Official!

#63Thanks guys!
He sent a message after saying he thought he could maybe win the green game but didn't want to go "another long term round." Maybe means I play too slow for him. lol. It was definitely surprising and a little anticlimactic but I'd like to think I at least somewhat earned it by thrashing him in the purple game! As green I felt like I had some decent ideas of how to proceed and a few good moves to use but it's hard to say how it would have gone. Plus imagine if he wins that one only for us to go 1-1 again in the next tiebreaker round! Do tiebreakers ever end btw?
No worries man, you've been more than generous. I sure as hell never expected this to happen, lol. I feel kind of guilty, I don't want to bankrupt you on points! At least they don't seem to be worth too much anymore, hahaComment -
