    Question about poker software.
    Howdy all.

I've been looking at some of the software that's available for online poker like PokerOffice et al.

It's pretty hard to figure out what's decent since 99% of the sites that have info are shilling an affiliate link for the software. Any recommendations? Are all the decent utils commercial or are there any open source or freeware?

Finally, are hand histories pretty proprietary per site, or is there standard format(s) of hand histories? For example, Bodog's hand histories, are they a different format from anything else out there, or are they similar to PokerStars? How about SBR's Poker app logs?

Really just looking for some basic stats on my hand histories, nothing in depth.

    Thanks in advance,
    Richards

Bodog's HH are the worst you'll see anywhere. You basically have to have some sort of software to read them. Poker Tracker and Holdem Manager are the two more widely used HUDs and they usually give you a free trial. They are worth going ahead and paying for them, they aren't that much in the long run. If money is an issue, you can buy them for a discount and only have the license work for lower stakes. There is sit n go software out there too if that is what you want to play. PokerStove is free and is a recommended download for reviewing hand histories.

Thanks for the answer daneblazer -- exactly what I was looking for some opinions and info on software not accompanied by shilling.

I see poker tracker is only $45 for the lower stakes version of it seems to be a good value. I downloaded PokerStove and it looks to be a nice tool as well.

holdem manager is much better than pokertracker imo. there customer sevrice/updates are alot better and the software is easier to use.

All sites hh are different as well. Some intentional do it so you cant use a tracking software

Yeah that makes sense I suppose it depends on the style of game the site wants to project. Just a side question that popped into my head: What site is the most "anti-software" in that they prevent/discourage the use of helper software the most?

Mostly right now I'm just looking for something to tabulate stats AFTER the fact, maybe not a HUD while I'm playing but something to take a peek at the HH logs and give me a few stats.

In the meantime I'll probably look at buying HM or Pokertracker for future use.

using huds and trackers are same as cheating, be a man and play vs others without cheating

                I can't disagree with that...

Per my last message, really what I'm looking for is something to look at my logs AFTER a session just to evaluate the decisions I made to improve my game going forward. I'm not really looking for an aid during play.

I did download PokerStove and have been using that by just manually looking at my HH and entering in the data on certain hands to see how I could have played differently, etc.

I wouldn't think that would be "cheating" just a good way to look for holes in your game, no?

I'm actually thinking of just writing some simple tools using a parsing library to read in a hand history and crank out some simple stats, unless I can find a freeware/open source thing. I'm sure building such a tool will be a nice exercise in itself.

are you saying that you feel all software that helps track/report the hands that you have personally been involved with is cheating? In my opinion that is silly. If you were disiplined enough, you could manually record the same information. That is not cheating.

The HUD/Tracker software just makes it easier and automates it.

There aren't many. Cake is unique in that it bans HUDs but not hand history databases (both HEM and PT work with it). Basically all the major sites are supported by both trackers, but most of the minor sites aren't. It depends on whether a site produces hand histories that databases can parse and import (not all do), and whether the trackers have bothered to support them yet. The biggest sites that aren't supported by the trackers are some extremely soft country-centric ones.

Pardon my ignorance, but I'm still learning the online poker lingo: what is it if a site is "soft"? A poor caliber of player?

                      Thanks!

A soft site is profitable due to bad players.

Everyone is using them, only fish don't use huds and trackers.
