Why is this soccer game on ESPN SO DAMN BORING
I just don't get the fascination with this sport

I don't care about Germany or Portugal, never been there, not from there, don't know anyone from there. Why should I care?

I just watched the first half of this game and it was literally 22 guys running back and forth on a field the entire time. BORING. No excitement. I just don't get the religious like devotion to this sport that other countries have. How can you be able to put up with it?

I'll watch the USA in the World Cup, but that's it.

When two quality world class teams play each other is tends to look more boring than normal because there is more strategy and restraint involved.

It still has a decent pace and is a good match up to this point.

I do admit I like watching the African teams in the world cup try to embarass the self entitled soccer powers of the world. Like Senegal did in 2002

Can an American seriously complain about soccer when you guys are obsessed with baseball and football?? Funny how the entire world loves watching soccer yet only americans watch these dumbfoundingly boring sports. Baseball is like a bunch of overweight guys in tights and football has a whistle every 2 seconds and is more about the coaches than the players. I don't mean to take a shot at Americans or their sports, but the ones like you really make Americans look ignorant with comments like this

LOL, usually when I am watching something I don't like on TV, I use the remote to change the channel. If you don't like watching soccer, turn on a Lifetime movie or the Home Shopping Network. Or post about how much you can't stand watching a game on Tv, because you know... It's not like there are 800 other channels..

That game was pretty boring. Dozed off and woke up because of cheering. (Oh, that was the team I bet on. Good. lol) Soccer goes through different developments. Right now the game is definitely going through a more boring stage, for many games, because defenses clog up the middle. They call it parking the bus, and it doesn't require soccer skills, just spacial recognition.

The first game today was interesting, with the Dutch creating one chance after another in the 25 minutes. But they didn't score and then the other team did. lol Dutch 28 shots and no goals, Danes 8 shots and 1 goal. Watch the first 20 minutes of that game. The first touch of the Dutch was incredible. Later in the game they ran out of gas. They had spend too much energy early on, and couldn't keep up the pressure in the final 20 minutes when they needed to.

Every tournament, without fail, Americans start this topic. I have yet to see the first of these OP's asking himself why he is too ignorant to understand the game. It's always the game that's at fault.

NFL games have average of 12-15 minutes of action

The rest is replays and commercials and showing cake eaters on the sidelines.

Thats not boring when you have 15 minutes of action in 4 freaking hours

12-15 minutes of action vs. 1 minute or less in a typical soccer game. Even when the best soccer players in the world aren't busy hurling themselves at the ground or kicking it out of bounds, they miss the goal by 20 yards when shooting from the top of the box. It'll never catch on here.

You guys fall for it every time. Tell a soccer fan his game sucks, then stand back and watch. Too blind to see you're being baited. Quit taking them so seriously. The words of a few hardly represent an entire country of over 300 million people. You think ESPN and all their sister channels would be broadcasting/promoting Euro, Champions League, etc. if nobody in the US watched? In the US there's more cable channels dedicated to soccer than there are to baseball and hockey. The majority of people who watch are gamblers, not fans. True of all "big" sports. Chill the f*ck out.

An American who bets on soccer.

Whenever soccer is mentioned, there's always talk of it as a sport on the rise. And every year, I try to give it another chance. I like the global appeal, less commercials, not 4 hours long, diversity of players, and tournaments.

I really want to like soccer, but I end up laughing at myself every single time I watch a game. It's the same old tentatively try to score a single goal and then pack it in on defense crap. If the game ever opened up, even a little bit, I think most of the detractors would quiet down.

I hear you; my "rant" was aimed at those who go f*kin' bananas if somebody dislikes their game. The old "my dad can beat up you dad" nonsense, comparing sports, athletes, etc. I watch games I bet on. Got a Brazil A game streaming right now. Think I'd be watching if I didn't have money on it? Just think it's funny, if one of us "ignorant Americans" doesn't care for baseball, baseball fans don't shit themselves defending their game. They watch it for themselves, not anyone else. They really don't care what non-fans think.

What non-Americans fail to acknowledge is soccer is a nationalistic sport. Euro is a perfect example, 16 teams representing their entire country (and it's awesome). When World Cup rolls around, you see US fans in abundance. But don't fool yourselves, on a fall Saturday you'll see twice as many people at a college football game than a mid level premier league match. But who cares. We got ours and you got yours. F*ckn' enjoy it.

I really want to like soccer, but I end up laughing at myself every single time I watch a game. It's the same old tentatively try to score a single goal and then pack it in on defense crap. If the game ever opened up, even a little bit, I think most of the detractors would quiet down.

If you want more open play with more scoring, watch spanish la liga, german bundesliga or dutch eredivisie. Three of my favorite leagues to watch with more offensive minded soccer. You watch these international big tournaments where these first rounds are formatted so that teams play tentatively. Also Stay away from Italian soccer shit is boring/crooked as hell.

                                                        hate pretentious American soccer fans

the worst. just because you play Fifa for PS3 doesn't mean you're a soccer expert. you know less than 8 year old South American shantytown village dwellers who grow up actually living and breathing the sport. and just because you watch soccer, it doesn't mean you're cultured. take the stupid scarf off your neck and stop pretending you're a die hard "fan" of some random English Premiere team

I love soccer but that German Portugal game was a little slow. Hardly any scoring opportunities for either team. I loved it though...I had under 1.5 and have Portugal u4.5 goals for the tourney and Germany to win the group. Couldnt have worked out better... Gambling makes all sports better.

Casual(or non) soccer fans shouldn't bother watching group games. Be exactly what you are a casual fan, watch the semis, watch the finals and enjoy. I absolutely hate hockey and baseball and couldn't watch 5min of a regular season game but i enjoy watching the world series and Stanley cup finals because as a sports fan, you can appreciate the importance and increased intensity in the games.
