Celebrity socialite Kim Kardashian filed for divorce on Monday from NBA player Kris Humphries, just 72 days after they tied the knot in a made-for-TV celebrity wedding.
"I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision," said the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star in a statement. "I had hoped this marriage was forever but sometimes things don't work out as planned."
Humphries told TMZ he was "devastated" to learn his bride had filed for divorce and is "willing to do whatever it takes to make it work."
The filing in Los Angeles County Superior Court provided few details, other than to state the couple have a prenuptial agreement that will dictate how they divide up their assets. Kardashian is asking that both sides pay their own attorneys' costs and that a judge terminate Humphries' rights to spousal support.

The divorce, if finalized, would be Kardashian's second. She was married to music producer Damon Thomas from 2000 to 2004.
Kardashian and Humphries, who played last season for the New Jersey Nets, became an item in December 2010 after Kardashian starting showing up courtside at Nets games. Their relationship was chronicled on the Kardashians' reality show, with the season finale capturing Humphries' romantic proposal, in which he proposed on bended knee with a 20.5-carat ring by spelling out "Will you marry me?" in rose petals.
The news of the couple's split comes more than two months after their highly publicized wedding on Aug. 20. Those in attendance included Humphries' Nets teammate Jordan Farmar and Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom, who is married to Khloe Kardashian.
During the filming of their reality show on E!, "Keeping Up with the Kardashians: Kim's Fairytale Wedding," Humphries was not pleased that she wanted to use her maiden name on their official wedding contract, and the couple got into several arguments about it during the show. Kardashian wanted to keep her last name for branding purposes.
The special aired Oct. 9 and 10, two months after the ceremony, prompting online card company someecards.com to prophetically offer a greeting last summer that read: "Here's hoping Kim Kardashian's marriage lasts until her wedding special airs in October."
Entertainment media have breathlessly reported every available detail on the relationship since it began, including early signs of trouble earlier this month. Court filings show that Kardashian signed the petition on Sunday.
Rumors recently surfaced that Kardashian was getting annoyed with Humphries' partying without her during the NBA lockout. Kim, on the other hand, was spotted eating lunch with ex-boyfriend, Miami Dolphins running back Reggie Bush, over the weekend.
"She wanted the fairy tale and she got caught up in it all," a source told People.com. "She felt like the pressure of the TV show just isn't what they could have handled."
Kardashian said she and Humphries "remain friends and wish each other the best."
A phone message to Kardashian's divorce attorney, Laura Wasser, was not immediately returned, The Associated Press reported.

I’m not sure what is more embarrassing being the Cardinals backup QB John Skelton and being downed in his your endzone for two safeties within five minutes or marrying a guy the Nets backup center. In either case, you find yourself on your knees saying I can’t believe I’m blowing this.
