monopolies are never good.
i remember when cingular bought at&t and their 1 year contract became 2 years.
you could already unlock iphone to use with tmobile so not a big deal.

Actually 39billion is a fukin steal. Seemed low to me. I think Att took on some debt from the deal. Just read about it, basically Att bought tmobile because of all the cell sites to try and catch up with verizon.
Smart play. To build all the cell sites that they get from tmobile woulda take 5 years.
Verizon will spring and buy sprint in the next year now

Hmm, hard to know if that was over or under market cap.
Big deal though. See how it plays out.

Also note:
Voice, both companies use the same frequency. Data, they use different.
New phones are coming with dual chips so it's no big deal.

Just read this online and it's a very interesting move for AT&T. Both companies have their individual problems, so it should be interesting to see how AT&T uses the strengths of T-Mobile.
I highly doubt this means by AT&T rates will be going down

Can't see how they'd change much as long as Verizon carries the iPhizzle
And besides...work picks it up for me so I'm good.

This is awful news. AT&T is the worst company in the world. They are greedy. They have horrible Customer Service. Their rates are ridiculous. Their term and conditions are punitive. T-mobile had the best Customer Service in the world until they started off-shoring their CS.
This is a sad day for T-mobile customers.

Technically it's a sad day for all Americans that enjoy the illusion of freedom. T-Mobile was the only cell provider in this country that does not hand over EVERY piece of information on every customer to the NSA and FBI link. Every other provider hands this information over voluntarily, at their own pace, probably not all of it etc. AT&T, on the other hand, not only willingly gives them everything, but actually built a separate facility in San Francisco to fiberoptically splice all the info they get, giving the government a direct, real-time, pipe line to every call, email, web, app etc. of every AT&T user link.
You can see the building here, it's listed as Level 3 Communications, and this is their largest subcontracted project.
Can you hear me now?

This is a biggy to me.
The fact that they're the only GSM provider is another problem. Anyone who needs an international phone will now have one choice until GSM is replaced.
Not to mention dropping down to 3 providers won't do anything good for competition amongst carriers. We're back to the douche vs turd-sandwich debate again.

say hello to higher monthly rates, hidden fees & more layoffs. pretty soon the RBOC's will all dissappear & we'll be back to only one phone company named BELL.

AT&T is garbage... drops at least 5-6 calls per day. I drop them with an iphone4 and other flip phones. I drop them with full service and with no service. I drop them in my house, in my car, at work, at lunch, everywhere.
**** AT&T if you live in California. Go with sprint or verizon... I'm switching asap.

There was a time when T-mobile was VoiceStream. That's when they were only in the Midwestern States in the early 2000's.

People these days apparently think the definition of "monopoly" is just "really big company." Any time a major corporation buys a competing corporation you hear it all over again.
In order for AT&T's acquisition of T-Mobile to be classified as a monopoly it would have to create a situation where it can set prices independently of any competition (which it isn't), and in order to sustain that monopoly for any significant length of time it would have to be able to bar new entry into the industry (which it can't). AT&T buying T-Mobile still wouldn't give the company even 50% of the cell phone subscription market- let alone 100%.
