Natural disaster heading your way - would you leave your home or stay?
Most probably know Cyclone Yasi is due to hit Northern QLD in 15. Category 5 storm (the worst there can be). Think Hurricane Katrina but a stronger storm.

Would you listen to the warnings that came almost 36hrs ago via automated text msgs, voicemails, tv and radio warnings telling you to evacuate or would you bunker down and stay in your home? Just curious as friends and I have been arguing about this for hours now.

And if you would stay - why?

Don't have to worry about any of that here.

      Not going anywhere.

Depends on the type of building of course but if there was any real danger, I would board up and secure everything as best I could and get myself and family out of there.

I will leave immediately. No reason of trying to save something that is going to be destroyed by the monster typhoon.

When Katrina hit the land it wasn't going 225 mph. The speed that hits the land is what matters not the speed in the middle of the sea.

Who cares which one is stronger, irrelevant to Sharis question.

As for me, my ass is gone. I've lived with Tornadoes all my life and even been through an "f6" tornado with winds >300mph. I've seen the massive devastation caused by these types of storms. People sucked out of storm cellars on one side of the street while on the other side houses left standing. Completely random shit.

Anyone that sticks around is playing Russian roulette, not worth it to me.

i had pondered this question a lot, particularly after the events of katrina.

i would certainly bolt, take whatever can be luggaged to a rational degree and leave everything else behind.

I guess an issue is what type of sheltering (if any) does the government provide?? I'm assuming since we're talking australia there are at least some emergency protocols in place that open certain community centers and the like to be prepared for storm refugees.

It really is an unfathomable situation, but i would heir on the side of caution and not stick around to stay with my property that stands a sizable chance of being completely levelled.

According to wiki, Katrinas maximum sustained winds were 280km/hr.

Maybe he is at sea, albeit that does kinda rule out the whole run for the hills concept.

Depends, if I had a family and children I would bail. If I was single like I am now, I would bunker down so I could help with the aftermath.

You need to do what a lot of people did during Katrina.

Ignore the warnings and stay in your home. Then when you get stranded/injured/killed you can blame the government for not protecting you and hope they give you free money.

I know you said this as a joke but in actuality, I know JJ would help us if we were stuck. That's the part he tends to gloss over on here - he is actually a great friend.

As for me - even without my son - I'd bolt. But apparently quite a few haven't. The sad part is there are so many government programs in place here - more so than any other place I've lived in other than Norway - that even if you'd hopped a train somewhere with not a penny to your name, the social welfare system would've taken care of you. And yet this country still came out of the GFC ahead.
