strange story. Hopefully no one died. But had to be some sort of endogenous substance that contributed to this malady affecting all these kids at once. Thousands of kids work their assess off year round in college sports. Too much of a coincidence that 12 of them all at Iowa get afflicted with this.

Rumor has this could be caused by bad supplements. A high school in Texas had this problem earlier this years as well.
