    My biggest gambling day ever
It was Friday November 5th 2010 and I was sitting on my couch with the Racing Form. I had plans to head up north to the Borgata in Atlantic City to meet a friend and bet the Breeders Cup races on Saturday. As I started to handicap I noticed that they had some of the big races on Friday night as well. The races had already started but I saw that a Pick 4 was starting with the 7th race.

I have always been a fan of the Pick 4 especially in big races like this so I set to handicapping them. After that I checked my online sports account....nothing but tumbleweeds. Oh wait...I have some loyalty points which I hurriedly cash in to get some betting money. This is what I bet: $1 Pick4 part wheel 3,4,11,12/2,3,4,9/2,3,5,6,7/1,3,6,8 . The bet cost $320.

The first race went well as the 12-Dubai Majesty won the Filly and Mare Sprint at odds of about 9-1. Not a bad start. I won the second race as well as the 4-Awesome Feather came in at odds of 4-1. Now I am thinking I have a shot at a decent payoff...if only somehow I could beat the huge favorite(Midday) in the next race, the Filly and Mare Turf.

My wifes family was in town and we were leaving for dinner. I waited and stood at the door to watch while everyone else walked to the restaurant up the street. There was a cavalry charge down the stretch and about midway through I see Midday pull in front...but not pull away. The horse on the inside won by a neck....all I saw as I hurriedly left to catch up to everyone was that the winner was the 5 horse. I knew I had the 5 but had no idea of the odds.

We get to the restaurant and I try to hide the fact that I am antsy. There is a 30 minute wait. I text a friend of mine who lives and breathes horse racing and ask him what the odds were of the horse that won the 9th race. He tells me that the horse was 46-1. I text back "are you serious?" "yes..why?" "I have four horses live in the PICK 4". "OH SHIT!!!!"

Texting back and forth I try to get my potential payouts.....even though he is at the track my friend never sees them. We finally get seated for dinner and it is harder for me to be so obvious with my phone but I glance and see a text that says "4 mins to post". I am about to bust....there is a bar next door and I want to get up and find a TV but there is no escape. Ten minutes later I manage to send a "?????" to my friend. He sends back "8 horse....you are a winner". I now ignore sensibilities and pull my phone out and text "what did it pay??"

I wait. And wait. And wait. No text. I now send a "wtf??" Finally after 15 minutes I open a browser and pull up my account online....nothing. Refresh....again nothing. Refresh...oh shit...my account now shows a win of $34,809.50. OMG I think as I calculate in my head it paid over $68,000!!!

Needless to say when to the Borgata next day and lost about $5000 betting the races and craps I wasn't so upset.

It has bankrolled my yearly trip to Vegas for the first two rounds of March Madness this year. This will be my 20th straight year for those 4 days....no better time to be in Vegas in my opinion.

How many bet points did you have to get $320 in cash? And if you have that many bet points how/why is your account tumbleweeds? Congrats if you really hit it but it sounds a little unlikely to me.

those pick4 or pick6 bets can pay pretty good. I saw a guy win the place pick all for 10,000 once at Del Mar, he had to do IRS paperwork for his money.

I actually cashed in enough to get $710 which I believe is 90,000 points. Just because I have Betpoints doesn't mean I have alot of cash in my account. In fact I have about 45,000 in there now....though this time with a large balance. 3x betpoints this weekend if you bet through your mobile.

Betting horses offshore is a tricky situation for the average Joe. You really have to take into account a lot of variables. I know my book doesn't pay out if no one in the mutuel pool has it. Taking this into account I know I won't be spending $400 on a pick 4 at Finger Lakes with a lot of bombs in there. Also, there is a 2,3, or 5k payout cap for this track. I forget. Little things like this are important. Now bigger tracks there is a 20k payout and 99.99% of the time there will be a ticket.

Another good thing with dgs horse software is you could do pick 6 for $1. I didn't mention the best thing about playing offshore, but I know most of you who do, know what is the best thing.

My biggest day would have been when the pick 6 at delmar was about 4-7 million this past summer. I forget what it went off at. I can't cap so I take a combo of picks from the daily racing form, the ny post, I looked at the pick 6 tickets from the tvg hosts and sometimes watch the board for the first leg. I had ample funds and put together a $1 p6 for about $200 something. To make a long story short, I was going into the last leg with 2 or 3 horses that would have paid about 2k or 4k. The race is going to go off in 10 minutes and i see a piece of paper on the floor which I jotted down Bob Bettigers of tvg pick 6. I had the #7 horse circled as that was his top horse he selected in that race. Once I saw that I felt like shit because I didn;t have it in my p6 and would have if i had this paper. I did exactas and tri's keying the 7. of course the #7 won and I think my 2 horses came in 2nd and 3rd. I would have won either 15k or 17k if I had the 7.

It haunts me because I had the picks. If it was a horse who wasn't picked, oh well,no biggie.

Great story but i would had to have some kind of excuse to go to the bar to see the race. by the way, the pk3 and pk 4's are the only way to go. I am thinking about going to Santa Anita today. 45 minutes drive. i go there 7 to 8 times a year

There was a scandal/thread made about I say 8 years ago at the rx.com concerning what books that was a fixed race at Finger Lakes. To make a long story short the owner or trainer opened a bunch of offshore account the night or a few days before. All they did was bet this horse, which had a 20-1 or somewhere lower ml. Maybe it went off 8-1 or around there. Some books didn;t pay, some did. This thread is about 20 pages or so long. if you are bored oneday and have an hour to read it, go for it.
