The Cougars got off to a fast start against Baylor in the semfinals, shooting .536 from the floor over the first 20 minutes and took a 13-point lead into halftime. Despite upping the accuracy to 61.9 percent after the break, Washington State had to hold on for the six-point win over the Bears. Five Cougars notched double figures in the win, led by Klay Thompson's 20 points. Thompson was 5-of-8 from the floor overall with all five baskets coming behind the arc (5-of-6). Faisal Aden added 13 points in support, followed by DeAngelo Castro, Reggie Moore and Brock Motum, who chipped in 12 points apiece. Washington State should be a factor in the Pac-10 this season, with balanced play at both ends of the floor. The team is enjoying a +18.9 scoring margin thus far, averaging 78.7 ppg, while allowing just 59.8. Thompson and Aden are quite the lethal duo. Thompson is shooting .491 from the floor and averaging 21.5 ppg, while Aden checks in at .503 shooting and 16.8 ppg. The pair are also responsible for 55 of the team's 90 three-pointers this season.
Matt Howard scored 19 points and Shelvin Mack added all 17 of his points in the second half, as Butler advanced to today's championship game by holding off a tough Florida State squad on Thursday. With Mack leading the way, Butler built up a 15-point second-half lead, but the Seminoles came roaring back, with the Bulldogs surviving. Butler won the game despite shooting just .380 from the floor overall. What certainly helped was the fact that 11 of the field goals the team did make came from three-point range. Howard and Mack have been a potent combination in their own right. Howard paces the team in both scoring (18.4 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg), while Mack is duel threat as well, showing the ability both score (14.8 ppg) and distribute (team-high 43 assists). The problem for the Bulldogs is that there isn't a whole lot of scoring punch beyond Howard and Mack. The team is shooting just .420 from the field overall and 73.4 ppg.
