How many college athletes you think have sportsbook accounts?
I was thinking about this last night when I watch eastern kentucky run down and hit a 2 to cover the spread. I graduated from Tennessee Tech a few years back and had a few friends on the basketball team. I know of three of the players at that time that had BetJamaica accounts with me. I know for a fact one game, one of the players threw the ball away a couple times and the other team covered the spread. I asked him about it and he told me he never bet on his own team and he would never do that. This has been quite a few years ago with the internet was just getting popular. With the easy access of sportsbooks now online it would be very easy for players to make some money. I am not talking about big time players at big time schools, but at the mid majors and smaller schools i really think this is reality. This is a easy way for guys to make money. How easy would it be to just go i am going bet 500 on the other team to cover and i am the point guard and have a few turnovers here and there. How much do you guys think this happens in college sports/

a lot. they did an anonymous survey of all the college athletes in the country a couple years ago. something like 75% admitted betting on games they were not participating in. and something like 15% admitted betting on there own games.

I had a bookie but I was one of the few in the early to mid 90s. I never talked about it with any teammates though, only my best friends. They were small bets here and there. There were only a few online books back then and I didn't know anything about them anyway. It's too hard to shave a football game though unless you are a QB.

i was wrong. just googled the survey. 30% admitted betting on games. didnt specify if it was games they played in. and 2% admitted accepting money to play poorly in there own games.

college running back best position to fix a game. one or two fumbles in the red zone and its a wrap. remember the northwestern running back that got caught. one deliberate fumble at the two yard line.

I would guess a few of the bench warmers would have a sportsbook account.

From where I went to school(which is a good school in BCS conference), a lot of the guys bet with locals. Some were heavy players as well who went on to make it in the pros. They never bet on games they were in on their own accounts, but they would often give a hint as to whether or not they would likely cover a number.
