He had about $40 M coming on his current contract thru the 2014 option - this deal adds 6 more years and another $120 M to that.

No question he's a great player. In today's market he's really a bargain at these numbers - but it sure is going to tie them up in terms of signing other stars - not only CarGo, but Jimenez as well. Looks a lot like Todd Helton all over again.

Rockies are going to try to actually keep their stars this time. Everyone in Colorado is pumped.

i'm sure they did there due diligence and think for sure he isn't a guy who is going to go operation shutdown on them once he got the money. but wow. i thought he had only been in the league a couple years. isn't it five full service yrs before you are even eligible to be a free agent. why give a guy all this money before you have to.

they also signed de la rosa to a 2 yr./ $21.5 mil contract.

basically no decent pitchers available on the market this year.

He was signed through 2014 anyways, in 2015 he was have been a UFA, this deal simply extends that --

the deal will run through the age of 35, which us great as he theoretically shouldn't show any significant aging affects.

20M/ year in 4 years should look like a bargin for a plus defender at the most important division to go along with the type of offense he provides.

My first thought was damn, but lookin into it it's a fair deal. A little bit less than he'd probably get on the FA market for those last few years.

Keep him now or lose him later. If you wait till they are a year away from free agency no agent is going to let them sign with the Yankees out there looming.

crazy to pay that much. where will it come from? ticket prices already thru the roof. where do the fans get the money to buy them? there will be empty seats everywhere. baseball not that interesting a game to pay that much to see it. it seems that people go to games to eat. a 3 hour game you would think they would eat before they go into the park and if still hungry get something after the game. no, they pay 5.00 for a bottle of tap water, 6.00 hot dogs, etc. etc. with hi def tv you would think they would stay home to watch. if they want to get out of house go to minor league park.

Seems like a well calculated move for the Rockies.
He's great to watch and the Rocks would be a lesser
                                      team without him.

It might be a decent deal for Colo if they have the rights to trade him at will. He might net quite a lot in a trade to the NYY in 3 years when Jeter retires.

I don't blame the players for accepting these deals but something is wrong with the economics of baseball. An average guy just can't afford to bring his family to a Major league game anymore, cost is akin to a car payment ( maybe $4-500 ?) or a couple of days pay at a good job.

Go back about 35 years and star players were just starting to crack the million dollar a year salary level. Well with inflation that should make it like 5M now, not 20M.

Go back farther like in the 20's and 30's....and ballplayers worked real jobs in the off-season.

Yep, Nolan Ryan was the first to get the $1 million in 1980. Think about the fact that Mark Fidrych was earning the major league minimum just four years before that, $19,000.

You really only have to go back to the mid-70s to find the majority of MLB players holding down winter jobs. I talked to journeyman Jerry DaVanon a few years back for an interview piece at another site, and he was teaching and refereeing high school basketball in the offseason while he was with the Astros in the 70s. He still refs schoolboy hoops in the Houston area, as a matter of fact. He probably never earned more than around $25,000 in a season, and his son Jeff was earning seven figures just a couple of years ago primarily as a fourth outfielder for the D-Backs.

Who would you rather have Tulo at 7/134 or Werth at 7/126? This is a good deal by the Rockies.
