Rich Rod had seven wins this season and has improved the program. Guy should get a long term extension. The defense took a step back, but seven wins is seven wins. Extend his contract Michigan

#2This is like one of those posts where I'm not sure whether the guy is joking. Rodriguez needs to go, and frankly he never should have been hired. People like to say he wasn't given a fair chance, well yeah, he wasn't but its because everybody knew he wouldn't work. He's not a good fit, and that's not just because the alums don't like a guy who doesn't run a pro-style offense, its because you've got guys like Mario Manningham, Adrian Arrington, and Donovan Warren who went pro early because they didn't want to play for him. Its because offensive linemen like Justin Boren who trasnfered to Ohio State because they didn't want to play for him. Its because an elite QB like Ryan Mallet who Lloyd Carr postponed retirement by a year to make sure he wouldn't leave didn't want to play for him. Its because elite in-state defensive recruits like William Gholston committed to Michigan State while Rodriguez was chasing the next Pac-Man Jones in Demar Dorsey who couldn't get eligible at Louisville much less Michigan. Its not a coincidence that MSU won its first Big Ten title in 20 years this season.
Rodriguez is your typical "Big East coach" who runs up the score on bad teams and then can't play defense or beat teams that do. With a trip to the national title game on the line in 2007, Rodriguez' West Virginia team lost at home to a 4-7 Pitt team 13-9. So much for Pat White (who transfered from Auburn), Steve Slaton (who couldn't get a scholarship to Maryland), and Noel Devine and that "high powered offense." Sure their games are fun to watch, but there's a reason the Big East plays games at wierd times: its beacuse their games, and their teams, are irrelevant. You think the Big East champ is going to limp into a BCS bowl with a bad record now? The Big East only has 8 teams, which means they only play 7 conference games and thus get a 5th nonconference cupcake. Without that, the Big East champ might play in a BCS bowl with a 6-5 record.
In the end, Rich Rodriguez is what he is: a coach who runs a gimmicky offense whose teams will always have a ceiling. He was a desperation hire by an athletic director with a track record of making desperation hires (Tommy Amaker and John Beilein). I don't blame Bill Martin for overlooking Jim Harbaugh back in 2007, after all Harbaugh was still coaching at a non-scholarship I-AA school at the time. But Brady Hoke, who led Ball State to a 11-1 record and is now turning around San Diego State was Lloyd Carr's former assistant and handpicked successor, and he never got an interview. Neither did Brian Kelly who previously coached 2 Michigan schools to championships. But the era of bankers masqurading as athletic directors at Michigan is over now. Dave Brandon played for Bo, he needs to make a stamp on this program bigger than just making it profitable. He can do it by pulling the plug on Rodriguez now, either Monday or after their inevitable shootout bowl loss to Mizzou or some other irrelevant team who has no business putting up 40+ points on a school with 42 Big Ten Titles. Just ask Nebraska fans whether they thought the Bill Callahan experiment was a good idea.
I'm sure Rodriguez will make a good coach for a Conference USA school or an offensive coordinator someplace.Comment -

#11They've gone from three, to five, to seven wins. So, RichRod is making progress...
His problem is he isn't and will never be a "Michigan Man".
And he continues to get his ass waxed by OSU.
I could see Michigan making a play for Harbaugh...

#20If he goes, I hope they are prepared to get the right coach...otherwise sit back and watch Michigan (the 5th or 6th best big ten team at best) for another season until the right coach is available. I don't care for RR's offense, but if they had a decent defense things may be better. I'd like to see him replaced, but not until the right guy is available.Comment -

#21I think he should get one more year with the offensive players he has coming back.
However, Greg Robinson needs to go and never, ever should have been hired in the first place. When are these coaches going to learn not to hire these retread head coaches as coordinators.
Another example. Al Groh at Georgia Tech. Defense was one of the worst in the nation.Comment -

#22People who think he should be given more time obviously don't understand that Rich Rod HAS NO CHANCE at doing well at Michigan. Rich Rod did well in a bullshit conference. Coaching Michigan football is the real thing. You better be one of the best coaches in the country because this program should always be in the upper echelon of college football.
Man I miss the days of being a title contender. Rich Rod is not a real coach, it is not that hard to figure out.
I GUARANTEE if he coaches here next year, the best we can do is 8-4 but I expect 7-5. It will be the same as this year.Comment -

#24I hated the hiring of rich rod from the start. He doesn't go after top level recruits. his players are all undersized, so it is no wonder that they get beat on. He had not had a win against a quality program since he has been at Michigan. His seven wins this year were against teams that should have been easily won. Umass came down to one possession, Indiana was close, Illinois was triple overtime! The guy is the head coach of a program that is too good for him. He is way out of his league. Can his ass and let's rebuild this program to what it was and should be.Comment -

#32Les Miles is staying where he's at as long as they'll have him. Big time SEC team with a never ending supply of athletes a great home field, and academic standards even Demar Dorsey could handle.
Yes I know Florida won 2 national titles running the same type of offense, but they had Tim Tebow a once in a lifetime combination of talent, size, strength, and leadership. They also had a ridiculous defense. Their first national title in 2007 they totally shut down Troy Smith who had carved up a Michigan defense with Lamarr Woodley, David Harris, and Alan Branch for 42 pts. It didn't hurt that Ohio State has *NEVER* beaten an SEC team in a bowl game, either. Their second national title came against Oklahoma, a team that has made a habit of breezing through its 1-game schedule of Texas (whom they never even have to face in a true road game!) and stealing a national title bid from more deserving teams.
If you think I'm going to give Rodriguez credit for going from 3 to 5 to 7 wins you're dreaming. 7 wins is the minimum, no matter what, especially when you're playing teams like Northwestern, Minnesota, and a MACrifice or two every year. And that's the thing, when you've got a coach like Rodriguez, who really has only that 2006 Sugar Bowl win over Georgia (in which they needed to convert a fake punt not to blow a 3 touchdown lead), you will *NEVER* be able to assume wins over teams like Purdue and Minnesota or even Indiana.
I haven't even gotten into the sanctions yet, either! Ok, sure every team bends the rules, every team is expected to practice more than the NCAA mandates, but you don't see every team complaining to the media and the NCAA about it!
At the beginning of the season, I thought the offense had a chance to be good this year, especially after what I saw from Denard in the Spring Game. But when people asked me how I thought we'd do this year, I said "considering our defense, there's a better chance Rodriguez is fired mid-season than there is of him coming back next year." I said we wouldn't beat OSU, PSU, Iowa, or Wisconsin, and we weren't even close. I said we'd lose at least one of MSU, Illinois, and Purdue, and we did.
I said before I thought Rodriguez' offense was a gimmick, and to be honest, it is. Rather than lining up 5 wide to run it up the middle and spreading the defense out, what's wrong with just overpowering them with superior talent and athleticism? I suppose its easy to line up 5-wide when you have a surplus of interchangeable, undersized wideouts because no WR with size and pro-potential wants to spend 4 years as a glorified downfield blocker. Just ask DeAnthony Arnett from Saginaw, MI who committed the other week to Tennessee because "he didn't want to play in a spread offense."
I really do think Harbaugh would take the job if it was offered him. Stanford, even as good as they are now, are barely filling their stadium. Its his home school in a Big Ten that with the addition of Nebraska has the chance to rival the SEC in depth. If Rodriguez gets fired before the Bowl game, I expect them to announce Harbaugh as the new coach shortly thereafter.Comment -
