Beer Review 3: Sam Adams Winter Sampler

    Chocolate Bock 7.5

Lots of chocolate and malt right away but with a velvety finish. A good after dinner beer. A nice addition to the sampler but nothing you could drink all night.

    Holiday Porter 7.5

The aroma was of toffee and roasted malt. Upon tasting brought out more chocolate and still more toffee followed by bitter hopps and cinnamon. A bit too much carbonation for a porter for my liking, but overall very good.

    Old Fezziwig 8

The aroma was of mild winter spice and sweet caramel. Nutmeg and and blended spices with the taste and a hoppy finish. A medium bodies smooth winter beer. A little thin, could use more body.

    Winter Lager 8

Aroma is not impressive. A lot of these other beers in the sampler score higher marks here. The taste is cinnamon and caramel with slight hops and ginger. The ginger has a slight orange taste to it. Creamy, drinkable, a good session beer, and well balanced.

I chose not to review the White Ale because it belongs in a spring sampler, not a winter one.

Excellent Choice with PURPLE Cougar, thats their best album start to finish. And Wieland started Heroin before this...not long before, but was on it already.

Interstate Love Song WAS 1994, i remember it so well, if i had to pick one song that defined my college life, it would be that song.

I only had the four I reviewed tonight. The Sam Adams Boston Lager and White Ale don't really belong in this sampler so I didn't review them. For some reason Sam Adams thinks they need the Boston lager in every sampler. And apparently they feel the need to put the White Ale (which is similar to a Blue Moon) in a winter beer pack. Someone must have been drunk when deciding that.

cougar...on your last review you did a dopplebock that was I guess 'smoky', and horrible. I have had a couple of dopplebock/doublebocks and haven't been able to find a good one yet. I found online one that is suppose to be good: Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock. If you don't try it out, I will try to find one and tell you how it is.

Yeah that was the Charkoota Rye Smoked Doppelbock Lager. It was horrible because it was smoked though, not because it was a Doppelbock. It tasted like a campfire and rotten cabbage. Ayinger is usually a pretty safe choice. Let me know about the Celebrator, I have heard it is good.

Mmm I am craving a good brew now. I went to a small pub this week and was excited they still had some oktoberfest brews left.

I am not much of a hard liquor guy, and I don't really smoke cigars anymore. When I worked at this cigar shop when I was younger I would steal the most expensive cigars. They went out of business.

Sam Adams makes a Honey Porter that is better than this one, less carbonated. I could do a porter review. There are a bunch of good ones Willie Bee

Haven't had that type of Adams (I usually stay away from the sweet beers-but did have a blackberry wheat when I was in Boulder that was amazing). I am not a fan of Rolling Rock...at least I wasn't 12 years ago. Has it gotten better? Have heard of Yuengling but never had it.

Not really. It's not a forming beer, so the texture is a bit different. It's well worth trying though. But it's not bitter, and though it's a bit sweet, it's not overpowering. Some chocolate bocks are just too much. This one isn't bad though.
