I got to get a heli ride to work everyday for a summer fighting forest fires. Heli rides never get old.

I might be doing wildland fire this summer too. I'm really going to school to be a firefighter paramedic. Any career in those fields would be so sweet

As a former flight paramedic I can assure you it is NOT even close to being one of the coolest jobs. Most of us went to fly because we were already burnt out on ground n' pounding in the box and thought we'd see a higher acuity when flying. Well, Bullshit. I got more critical patients on the ground at a greater frequency than when flying. I eventually left for nursing, greatest career change in my life. Just do a search on the number of helo's that have become lawn darts over the last few years and look at all the medics/RN's that have lost their lives just for showing up to work. Low pay, high risk, companies cutting back on safety= not a good profession. I wouldn't step foot on a bird again.

Before I got burned out as a medic on the ground, I loved it. The grind ends that dream quickly though.

I see what you are saying but I think location is a big part of it. I live in a city surrounded by the boonies. I live right next to the only 2 hospitals in a very big area. The landing pads are constantly being used by the ships transporting patients.

Sam,
We were quite busy. Volume was never an issue. It's the illusion that people that are flown are sicker (higher acuity) and it's just not that way. I can't remember how many times I was embarrased to even be bringing in a patient by air to a larger, more comprehensive hospital because they were doing so well.

I hope you get to fly one day if thats what you want to do but please don't buy into the illusion that it's a safe industry. It's anyting but. I've lost a handful of friends over the years. If you are married or have kids think about them. If you get the chance, try nursing or go the fire route. Paramedic is a stepping stone unfortunately. Hard to hear but it's reality.

I simply wasn't good enough to ever make much money at it. No regrets. Saw most of the country...and 1000's of sunrises. Neat to look back on, but can't say I miss it. Tough way to live.

My dad did it for a little while years and years ago. Tough to make good money without some endorsements. The experience would be worth it though.
