            From a Runners Blog
The two other men that most people were following were Jared the Subway guy who allegedly ran over 550 miles to train for the NYC Marathon and Edison Pena, the Chilean miner who ran a daily dose of 6 miles in in the mine while trapped underground and decided to run New York City Marathon as a publicity stunt.
As Dennis Miller would say, now, I don’t want to get off on a rant here, but.. well, here is my brutally honest as usual take on Pena and Jared:
Jared never wanted to run a marathon. He is not a runner. He did it because of his binding contract to Subway and because the corporate monkeys told him to.
These are words someone who’s forced into doing something against their will would say. Now mind you that it’s not a sub 4 hour marathon or a marathon at any pace that makes you a runner. It’s the constant pursuit of getting better and striving for improvement and running with that in mind. I think Jared absolutely lacks that commitment and hence he’s not a runner.
As for his training, he and the corporate PR engine behind him, they half assed it. He ran 3 times a week, one easy run, one “tempo” and one long run. That’s it. He never built up the endurance for a marathon. Not on that schedule. He is a Subway ambassador and this was his job for the last 5 months; to get ready to run New York and promote Subway along the way. He had no 40 hour work week outside of it. He had all the resources he wanted. Hell, he met Meb Keflezighi and got pointers, whatever good it did for someone like Jared.
So Jared put in a half assed training effort and got a half assed marathon result. I think it was to be totally expected. Last year almost half a million people completed a marathon. Out of that, about 278 thousand were men. Of those 278 thousand, 78.1% of them ran the marathon under 5 hours. That puts Jared smack in the bottom 20% of marathon finishers times. If that’s not abysmal I don’t know what is. But quite honestly for the people who are inspired by Jared it does not matter whether he ran a 5:13 or a 3:40. It would have been all the same. Jared is a marathoner and that is all that matters to them. Never mind that the average 32 year old guy who finishes a marathon does so under 4:18.

You think he chose to do it? Subway made him do it for publicity.

Why is it considered an accomplishment being 400 lbs and then losing the weight by eating sandwiches?

He didnt lose weight by just eating sandwiches. Its an accomplishment because it takes a lot of time, will and determination. Most of the people that run the marathon dont do it for a time, most are not even runners, they do it to say they were able to complete it.....and that is an accomplishment. I would love for everyone in here talking shit to go out and try and run a marathon, bet you wouldnt be back in here talking shit.

he went from weighing 425 pounds and going to an early grave from diabetes/heart disease to losing 245 pounds, making millions as spokesman for Subway and his own marketing company and marrying a hot nurse. not to mention hang out with celebrities.

and you people are bashing him cause he ran the marathon in 5 hours 13 min (not 6hrs)????

                            tough crowd.

So he ate like a pig for years and didn't care for himself and ballooned to the size of a cow at 400 lbs and one day he decided to start eating sandwiches and lose weight and quit feeling sorry for himself and being a lard ass.

                              Big ******* deal!

I guess you have to be a runner to understand. First of all he did not run the Marathon. With his time he walked large portions. We said he trained for a year with a personal trainer. His last 5 months his whole job was to run and promote his race. It was a publicity stunt only. It is offensive to people who really train for a marathon. Get up at 6:00 Am in the morning before work, run in pitch black at night, no personal trainers, no tips from famous marathoners. His log showed he averaged about 10 miles per week. This is not adequete training for even a half Marathon. I have known people to overcome tradgedy, sickness, war injuries to run a marathon, they really RUN the marathon. Maybe they should talk to the approx 40,000 who finished before him. For a 32 year old male that was a pitiful result. Losing alot of weight is not overcoming anything except his fat lazy ways. As stated before show up for the 2001 Bash I will takes you boys for a little run, lets see who can hang.

he had to travel at over 5mph to finish in 5:13.

                                  avg walk is 3mph.

so how did he walk a majority of the way and still finish in 5 hours? maybe he ran 20mph the few miles he did run?

if this was for publicy then less likely that he walked at all cause that would be bad publicity.

Based on his time he probably walked a 1/4 - 1/3 of the race - slow jogged the rest

A bit easily offended are we?

Marathons are popular outside the hard core enthusiasts for the mix of competitive vs. "Can they complete it" crowd. I didn't see anything in the run up PR that indicated this Subway guy was going for a record time. It was merely promoted as "from 400 lbs to being able to complete a 26.x marathon".

Whether you as a competitive runner like it or not, these races are a mix of competitive vs non. competitive. To get offended that someone in the non competitive crowd got a lot of publicity is just whining.

It doesn't take away from your accomplishments as a runner, but it does call into question your motives for even doing it.

One website has an interview with him before the race. He was hoping to just finish. His plan was to run for a mile then to walk for 15 seconds and get fluids then run some more. He had no time goal for this race, he just wanted to finish. Its his first marathon and he didn't come last.

For a guy that was 425lbs and then lost weight and ran/walked 26 miles. He doesn't have the body of a runner.
