Are you serious? The Soviets had Sputnik in orbit in 1957 and the first man in orbit in 1961.
Star Trek debuted in 1966.

Bingo! The movie was silent. She grabbed a shoe and put it by her ear and started talking while walking. Since there was no sound recorded it was pointless. Maybe this was the intent of the director. I will have a woman pretending to be talking to a shoe in my movie until they invent sound in movies.
